Obituary

Evelyn M. (Dawson) Smith of Concord died in her sleep at home on January 21st. She was 90 years old. She was predeceased in 1964 by her husband, Donald (Buzzy) McR. Smith, a founder of Concord Lumber Corporation, along with two of his brothers, Farnham and Benjamin. She is also predeceased by her brother Francis P. Dawson and her sister Ruth Carr. She is survived by her four children: Timothy of New York City, David, Mary, and Constance all of Concord, and three grandchildren: Autumn Smith of Anchorage, Alaska, Christina Quach of Malden, and April Vo of Quincy. Evie was born in 1923 in North Andover, MA to Francis and Ada (Morgan) Dawson. She grew up and attended school in North Andover and then attended Mary Washington College in Virginia and Katharine Gibbs School in Boston. In 1944 she married Donald at his family home on Academy Lane in Concord. She lived there with her father-in-law through World War II while Donald was in the Merchant Marine. When Donald came home after the war, they bought some land on Barnes Hill Road and built a house where they raised their family. Evie loved this house and property dearly and lived there for the rest of her life. After her husband's death, Evie worked as a secretary for Massachusetts Audubon Society in Lincoln, MA for over 20 years until she retired in 1985. She and her husband were active in the Concord Players. They also loved to go square dancing at the Concord barn dances. For several years prior to Donald's death they would pack up the four children and go camping on Mount Desert Island in Maine for a week or two each summer. Many happy times were also spent with family in Brewster, MA. One of the highlights of Evie's life was a month long trip to Alaska to visit her son, David. She went a second time when her granddaughter Autumn was born in Fairbanks. Evie loved gardening and for many years had wonderful vegetable and flower gardens. Service: Memorial Service, March 15th at 1 PM in the First Parish in Concord, 20 Lexington Road, Concord, MA
