Obituary

Evelyn E. (Hanford) Houck died peacefully on April 8, 2013 at Cape Cod Hospital, Hyannis, Mass. after a brief illness, with her family close by. She was born in Detroit, Michigan on December 31, 1919 and lived in Detroit, Ann Arbor and Battle Creek, Michigan until moving to Concord, Mass. in 1954. She lived in Concord until retirement to South Dennis, Mass. in 1986. Mrs. Houck was married for 53 years to Dr. LeRoy P. Houck who preceded her in death in 1998. Mrs. Houck was educated in the Detroit public schools and attended the Eastern Michigan University and the University of Michigan. After graduation from the University of Michigan she worked in Ann Arbor in a research laboratory sponsored by the University of Michigan Rackham Graduate School and Dr. Jonas Salk, conducting basic research that would ultimately assist Dr. Salk in his pioneering efforts to develop a polio vaccine. She also worked with Spanish speaking foreign students in medicine and the sciences at the University of Michigan English Language Institute. She earned a Masters Degree from Northeastern University while living in Concord. In Concord Mrs. Houck was active in several community organizations and pursued a long held interest in and research of family genealogy, tracing ancestors in this country back to times prior to the American Revolution. In retirement Mrs. Houck was active in her church and spent many hours in her lifetime passionate embrace of the art of creating hooked rugs; -- having designed many original patterns. She also enjoyed sharing her hooked rug skills with the mentoring and teaching of novices in that art. Several of her original design rugs were awarded judged prizes in exhibitions at the annual Barnstable County Fair. In her later years she also enjoyed painting and many other crafts, with the company of daughter Elaine and her two Jack Russell terriers. She leaves her son Malcolm H. Houck, and his wife Dorothy, of Maynard, daughter Laura L. Houck of Moab, Utah, Daughter Charlotte L. Pitman, and her husband Dr. Roger Pitman of West Newbury, daughter and long time caregiver Elaine E. Houck, of South Dennis, son Martin L Houck and his fiancé Jean (Cousins) MacLeod, of Lowell, grandson Perry Houck, of Moab, Utah, her brother William B. Hanford, Jr., of Ocala, Florida, and many loving friends and acquaintances.
