Obituary

Esther Ruby Williams Knox was born on March 28, 1914 in Waterproof, Louisiana to parents Matthew and Lizzie Winn (Calloway) Williams. Esther was the wife of the late McBurnett J Knox, Sr. and mother of Wendell J. Knox Sr., and Owen M Knox Sr., and mother-in-law to Lucy Algere-Knox. She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Alice Powell, Hallie Mae Brimmer, and brothers, Harry, Matthew Jr., and George Williams. In addition to her two sons, Esther is survived by niece Theresa (Billie) Threet, nephew Edward Brimmer Jr., grandsons: Wendell J Knox Jr., Matthew A Knox, Owen M Knox Jr, Clinton E Knox, great-granddaughters, Veronika, Ava. Ella, Avery, Lea, great-grandsons Daiki, Atsuki, Xavier, Owen III, and Xander. She is also survived by the countless other family and friends who were fortunate to know and love Esther. The family also expresses its appreciation to the staff of the Life Care Center of Acton. Along with being a loving wife and mother, Esther spent her work life providing home and childcare services to various families in New Orleans. In the 1970's she obtained a certification as a childcare specialist from a federally funded program, which led to additional work within the childcare and educational fields. Esther was also a cook without peer! Her culinary skills were diverse and many people remember a particular meal, dish, or desert prepared by Esther as, "The best I ever had!" Esther was a devout Catholic who attended Mass regularly until she was physically unable. However, she continued to receive weekly communion and her Rosary beads and prayer cards were never far from her hands, or her heart. Esther, a very spiritual person, was always out to ensure that her loved ones maintained a relationship with God. A visit with Esther would inevitably include the question, "Have you been to church?" For 101 years, Esther cared for, nurtured, educated, fed, and loved all of us who already miss her, along with numerous loved ones who are no longer with us. We all remember and celebrate Esther's life and know that she is now resting with God. Funeral services and burial will be held on Thursday, June 25th in New Orleans, Louisiana. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the "Black Philanthropy Fund (4635)" and mail to the attention of: The Boston Foundation, 75 Arlington Street, 10th Floor, Boston MA 02116.
