Obituary

Enid Clarke Winchell, 93, of Lincoln, passed away at home on January 31, 2018 in the arms of her daughter following a brief illness. Enid was born to Rhoda Margaret and Frederick Clarke in Surrey, England on September 26, 1924. Evacuated from Britain during World War II, she arrived in the United States on the Samaria, the last ship carrying English school children sent across the Atlantic to escape the German bombing raids. Her home in Wimbledon, England, was directly in the path of enemy planes heading to London. Enid was just 16 years of age and was responsible for her sister Jean, 14, and brother Hugh, 12. What she thought at the time to be a brief adventure turned into a five-year separation from her mother Meg, father Fred, and older brother Murray, 17. Enid and her sister Jean stayed first with Harland and Peggy Newton in Lincoln. All three Clarkes then were taken in by Alice Allegra Thorp, granddaughter of the poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, at her home on Brattle Street in Cambridge where they lived with a cowboy and learned about fingerbowls. It was not long before Enid met her future husband, Gordon, when visiting a friend in Lincoln. Enid attended Buckingham, Brown and Nichols, followed by Bouvé College in Boston. In 1944, Enid sailed back to England, holding a bouquet of roses from Gordon, to finish her Physical Therapy degree at Guy's Hospital in London, where she performed light therapy on children with Rickets. After a transatlantic courtship by mail, Gordon wooed her in the English springtime and they were married in Chaldon Church in Surrey on April 16, 1949. Enid and Gordon raised their family in Lincoln, where Gordon was a town doctor. Her beloved sister Jean raised her family in the nearby town of Concord with husband Peter Harwood. Right up to her last days, Enid was eager to hear the news about the world she cared for so much. Speaking with a chaplain recently, she came alive speaking of her activist days working for world peace. Most dear to her heart was her family over which she presided with determination and pride. Whether working in the family garden, skating, skiing or white water canoeing, Enid was game for adventure. Last year Enid completed a memoir of her extraordinary life, with the invaluable support of her granddaughter Claire, entitled: "For the Duration, The Life and Letters of a British Evacuee." Along with her beloved husband Gordon, Enid took action to make this world a better place. They traveled to Nicaragua as volunteers after the 1992 earthquake, formed a chapter of Beyond War and held meetings in their home, and they were founding members of the Peace and Justice committee of First Parish Church, traveling to The Hague for an historic peace conference. Enid was a vigorous leader in the community. She had turns as the head of the First Parish church school, chairperson of the Lincoln Sudbury High School Exchange Committee, and President of the Lincoln Garden Club. She involved her children in Civil Rights marches in Boston and took in exchange students from South Boston, Japan and Norway. Enid was a master gardener and a talented water colorist. When she set her mind to a project, there was no end to what she could accomplish. Enid is survived by her beloved husband Gordon, 98; sons William and Fred, all of Lincoln; son Gordon "Skip" of Portland, ME; daughter Margaret "Meg" Biddle of Moorestown, NJ; and her brother Hugh Clarke of Hambledon, England. She is also survived by her nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren, who will remember her well for her strength of character and activism, her stories, blackberry flummery and hot cocoa after skating. A memorial service will be held on Saturday June 2, 2018 at 11 am at The First Parish in Lincoln, 14 Bedford Road, Lincoln, MA Arrangements are under the care of the Dee Funeral Home of Concord.
