Elwood S. Kaplan, 82, of Shrewsbury, MA, formerly of Pembroke Pines, Florida, Garland, Texas and Peekskill, New York died Tuesday December 22, 2015 in Worcester, Mass. He was the beloved husband of 60 years of Roberta H. (Rosenzweig) Kaplan.
Born in The Bronx , New York on January 24, 1933 he was the son of the late Joseph Kaplan and Eva (Silverman) Kaplan. He attended New York City Public Schools and was a 1951 graduate of Fashion Institute High School of America.
He was employed in the insurance industry for many years, serving as an agent with Prudential Insurance in Hartsdale, New York from 1960 until 1974, and later with Reliable Life Insurance Company in Dallas, Texas from 1977 until his retirement in 1995.\
Mr. Kaplan resided in Peekskill, New York from 1965 until 1977, where from 1970 until 1977 he was involved in the operation of the family owned and operated Bobbie's Country Mart in Lake Peekskill. He later resided in Garland, Texas from 1977 until 1997, and Century Village in Pembroke Pines, Florida from 1997 until 2014. He became a resident of Shrewsbury, MA in 2014.
A former member of the National Association of Life Underwriters, and the Life Underwriters Training Council, he was also formerly active in the Knights of Pythias in The Bronx and the New York City Kiwanis Club.
He loved sports, history and keeping up with current politics. He was a family man and his greatest joy was spending time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He loved a good joke and was quick to laugh.
In addition to his wife Roberta, he is survived by his three loving children, Lonnie S. LaPorte-Beer and her husband George Beer of Shrewsbury, MA, Seth M. Kaplan of Dallas, Texas, and Dari L. Dee and her husband Charles of Concord, MA; his five devoted grandchildren, Hayden M. LaPorte and his wife Dr. Aimee Stark-LaPorte of Cypress, Texas, Joely S. LaPorte-Edwards and her husband James Edwards of Holly Springs, North Carolina, Landon D. LaPorte of Raleigh, North Carolina, Blayne E. Dee and Daniel V. Dee, both of Concord, MA and two great granddaughters, Milah Anne LaPorte and Emery Skye Edwards. He was also the brother of the late Sheldon W. Kaplan.
Visiting hours will be held Saturday December 26th from 2 to 4 pm at the Dee Funeral Home, 27 Bedford Street, Concord, MA.
A graveside service will be held on Sunday December 27th at 1 pm at the family burial plot in New Montefiore Cemetery, Pinelawn, Long Island, New York.
