Obituary

Elizabeth "Bette" Jane Barker (Kilpatrick) Taverner, 100, passed away Friday, April 9, 2021. Bette was born on May 24th, 1920 in Bangor, ME to Helen Natalie Barker (Glass) and Ira Willard Barker. She grew up in Bangor and Portland, graduating from the University of Maine in 1942. She was proud to have been the President of the "All-Maine Women" her senior year of college and kept strong ties to the University up until her passing. Bette and her first husband, Lt. Donald Kilpatrick, had one daughter (Nancy) who was born after Donald had been shipped to Europe in 1944. Donald was declared missing in action later that year. Bette was remarried in 1953 to Rev. Gilbert Y Taverner. For the next 35 years they were associated with Methodist parishes in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Bette and Gil retired to the Deaconess at Newbury Court community in Concord, MA in 1988. After Gilbert passed in 2011, Bette continued to be very involved in the Deaconess community, including writing the official history of the Deaconess. Bette was an active member of her local PEO chapter, an avid genealogist, and a wonderful entertainer. She is survived by her daughter Nancy Adelman, her two grandsons, Jonathan and Nicholas, and Nicholas' wife Aliina, and their twin daughters, Lucy and Marigny. A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in Bette's memory may be made to New England Deaconess Association , c/o Development Office, 80 Deaconess Rd, Concord MA 01742 or the University of Maine Foundation , 2 Alumni Place, Orono, ME 04469. Arrangements are under the care of Dee Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Concord.
