Obituary

Elizabeth "Betty" Kelley, age 86, of Concord, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 6, 2018. She lived a wonderful long life in the town she came to love, surrounded by family and friends. Born in Arlington, MA to the late Patrick and Margaret Kiniry, she was raised there with her sister Norine and her late brothers John, Gerald, and William. She was the most devoted wife to the love of her life, the late John "Jack" Kelley. Her family is at peace knowing they are dancing together again. Among Betty's many memorable qualities was a kind heart towards everyone, even those she didn't know. Her brain was like a calculator which served her well during her 40+ years working at Concord-Carlisle High School. She had the patience and skill to bake dozens of different kinds of Christmas cookies each year and if you saw them you know they were works of art. Her extended family and friends looked forward to her cookie baskets every year. "Nanny" taught her young grandkids to play poker with pennies and shared tea with them out of her fine china cups. She is survived by her children, Debbie Jones and husband Bob of Kennebunkport Maine, and Sue Callahan of Newburyport, her three grandchildren: Kelley Pratt and husband Aaron, Christopher Jones and wife Caitlin, and Meredith Plaud and husband Abel, all of Maine. If you knew her, you likely know about and have seen (numerous) photographs of her four great-grandchildren: Noah, Jack, and Michael Pratt and Tess Makena Jones. She is also survived by her sister, Norine Rochon and husband Bob, brother-in-law Bernie Tobin, and sisters-in-law Eunice Ayer and Barbara Kiniry. She shared many happy times with Jack's late siblings and their spouses, Betty Tobin, Barbara (Chuck) Fifield, and Joan (John) Collins, Alvah Ayer, her late in-laws Cobb and Joanna Kelley, and her brother John's late wife Mary. She also leaves many much-loved nieces and nephews. Please honor her memory through a random act of kindness, or going out to lunch (a favorite Betty pastime) to reminisce on how she touched your life. Get dessert, but ask for "just a sliver" as she always did. Immediate family members will gather for her private burial service at St. Bernard's Cemetery in Concord. The family wishes to extend sincere appreciation to the incredible staff at Avita of Newburyport for their kind and compassionate care. Memorial contributions may be made to an organization she supported throughout her life: St Jude Children's Research Hospital at 501 St Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105. Arrangements are under the care of Dee Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Concord.
