Elinor (Bakun) Lea, 94, of North Andover, formerly of Ayer, died peacefully on Sunday, June 17, 2018 at Lawrence General Hospital in Lawrence. She was the loving wife for 54 years of the late Donald Clarke Lea who died in 2008.
Born on May 11, 1924 in Plymouth, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of the late Alexander and Minerva Bakun. She grew up in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, attended Misericordia University in Dallas, PA, and later earned a Master's degree from Indiana University.
She met Don while they both worked for American Cyanamid in Bound Brook, New Jersey. After marrying, the couple resided in Connecticut, Exeter NH, Pennsylvania, and Southborough, MA, before moving to Groton, MA in 1981.
A devoted educator, she worked at numerous schools throughout her career, before spending many happy years teaching Physical Sciences at Nashoba Brooks School in Concord, MA.
She will be fondly remembered as an avid gardener and a fabulous cook. She was a member of the Herb Society for many years, and loved crafting her own floral designs. Elinor also loved Schnauzers and spoiled her dogs with many walks and special treats. In addition, she enjoyed family genealogy research.
Elinor is survived by four devoted sons, Christopher Lea and his wife Theresa (Corless) of Napa, CA, Peter Lea and his wife Linda (Oliver) of Brunswick, ME, Timothy Lea and his wife Michele Bourgeau Lea of Andover, MA, and Scott Lea and his wife Cindy Bruckner-Lea of Richland, WA. She was the proud grandmother of Jennifer Verrette and her husband Nate, Matthew Lea, Nathan Lea, Rachel Calello and her husband Ryan, Andrew Lea, Hannah Lea, and Colleen Lea, and great grandmother to Lucas Verrette. She also leaves behind two sisters, Joan Lavery and Alice Alcalde, her beloved dog, Maggie Mae, as well as many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, July 22nd, at 10 a.m. at St. Johns Chapel, Groton School, 282 Farmer's Row, Groton, MA.
A luncheon for family & friends will immediately follow at Gibbet Hill, 61 Lowell Road, Groton, MA. Please email timothylea7@gmail.com if you plan to attend the luncheon. She will be buried during a private service at the family plot in Pennsylvania.
