Eleanora Hartley Smith, 94, of Concord, formerly of Rowayton, CT, died peacefully on Tuesday, June 23rd at Rivercrest Long Term Care Facility in Concord.
Born in Worcester on February 21, 1921 she was the beloved daughter of the late Hartley LeHuray Smith and Ellen Jayne (Sharp) Smith. She grew up in Westborough before moving to Staten Island, New York at the age of eleven. There, she attended Staten Island Public Schools and graduated from Curtis High School in 1938.
Miss Smith studied at Barnard College in New York where she received a Bachelor's degree before attending the Pennsylvania School of Horticulture for Women in the late 1940's. In the early 1950's, she earned a Master's Degree in Education and History from Fairfield University in Connecticut.
An esteemed educator, she formerly taught Horticulture at the Brooklyn Botanical Garden and at the Southern Connecticut State University. From 1954 until her retirement in 1986, she taught History in the New Canaan, Connecticut Public School System to elementary, sixth grade, and high school students during the tenure of her career. Previously, she also served as the Curator of Education for the Stamford, Connecticut Museum.
A Concord resident since 2002, she was an active member of the First Parish in Concord. An amateur naturalist, she was an avid gardener and also traveled extensively throughout Europe, India, South America, and Iceland.
Survivors include a nephew, Navin Agarwal of Stow, a niece Meera Thompson of NYC and two great nephews.
