Edward T. Hughes Sr., 87, of Concord died Sunday April 5, 2015 in Concord. He was the beloved husband of 52 years of the late Margaret (Bradley) Hughes. The couple were married at St. Mary's Church in Cambridge in 1955.
Born in Cambridge on August 21, 1927 he was the son of the late Edward T. Hughes and Bridget (Corbett) Hughes.
He came to Concord at a young age and attended Concord schools. During his youth he worked at Daly's Poultry Farm on Old Bedford Road in Concord for his late Uncle Michael Daly. He later graduated from St. John's Preparatory School in Danvers.
Mr. Hughes served his country in the United States Navy as a Hospital Corpsman during World War II and also during the Korean Conflict.
He retired as a Postal Clerk after a 35 year career at the United States Post Office in Concord. He also worked part-time jobs for several local businesses in the Concord area.
A long time Licensed Private Pilot, he was a member of the Q'B's Flying Club.
He was a lifelong Concord resident who enjoyed all of the Town's history, traditions and activities. He was also a Life member of the Knights of Columbus.
His focus in life was on his many children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was the father of Deborah M. Moore and her husband Timothy of Londonderry, NH, Kathleen Werst and her husband Steven of Acton, Jeanne Pedi and her husband Joseph of Wakefield, Elizabeth Johnson and her husband Murray of Billerica, Michael E. Hughes and his wife Melanie of Bolton, Edward T. Hughes Jr. and his wife Tracy of Chelmsford and the late Patricia M. Griffin and is survived by Patricia's husband George William Griffin of Billerica. He is also survived by 20 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
A funeral Mass was celebrated on Monday April 13th in Holy Family Parish in Concord. Interment with military honors followed in the family burial plot in St. Bernard's Cemetery, Concord.
Concord's town flag flew at half-staff on Monday April 13th in recognition of Mr. Hughes military service in the U.S. Navy.
