Obituary

Edward C. Horne, 84, of Concord died Sunday April 4, 2010 at Emerson Hospital in Concord. He was the beloved husband of 59 years of Betty (Zumwalt) Horne. Born in Concord on October 2, 1925 he was the son of Nelson and Bessie (MacGlashing) Horne. He grew up in Concord, attended Concord schools and Concord High School. He was a member of the Concord High School football teams in 1941, 1942 and 1943 and was voted captain of the 1944 team, at which time he left in May, 1944 for military service.During World War II, he was awarded 3 bronze stars and the purple heart for his service with the U. S. Army's 124th cavalry in the Burma theatre of operations. Returning from the War and to Concord in 1946, he served as a coach under the late Bernie Megin of the 1946 to 1952 undefeated Concord High School football teams. In 1951 he married the love of his life, Betty Zumwalt and built the family home on Nashoba Road in Concord where they raised their family. Ed worked for the Town of Concord for 30 years and was in charge of maintenance for the Concord Public Schools. In 1978 he retired from the Town and went to work with the family business, Horne Builders Inc. until his death. He was a long time member of the Concord Independent Battery and a former member of the Musketaquid Sportsman's Club in Concord. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and was always going to the many activities of all his grandchildren.In addition to his wife Betty, he is survived by his son John N. Horne and his wife Susan (Myette) of Harvard, three daughters, Nancy J. Prunier and her husband Fritz of Shirley, Sandra E. Hennessy and her husband Robert of Westford and Laurie E. Iacino and her husband Joseph of San Diego, California, 11 grandchildren, Christopher, Nicholas and Alexander Horne, Francis III, Justin and Victoria Prunier, Robert, Megan, Brendan and Mark Hennessy and Justin Iacino. He was also the brother of the late Harold, John "Bud", Francis and Paul Horne and Rita Butler. Funeral will be held on Thursday April 8th from the Dee Funeral Home, 27 Bedford Street, Concord Center at 9 am followed by a funeral Mass in Holy Family Parish, Monument Square, Concord at 10 am. Interment with military honors will follow in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, Concord. Visiting hours at the Dee Funeral Home will be held on Wednesday March 7th from 4 to 8 pm. Concord's town flag will fly at half-staff on Thursday April 8th in recognition of Mr. Horne's service to his country during World War II.
