Dr. John Hedley-Whyte, MD, age 92, of Concord, MA, died peacefully at home with his wife by his side on March 11, 2026.
John was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England as the eldest son of Angus and Nancy (Nettleton) Hedley-Whyte on November 25, 1933. He attended the Dragon School in Oxford followed by Harrow School. After graduating from Harrow, he pursued Medicine first as an undergraduate at Clare College and Cambridge University (BA 1952). This was followed by clinical training at St. Bartholomew's Hospital in London, graduating with his Cambridge degree, MB BChir in 1958.
After his house jobs, he began training in Anesthesia at Barts in 1959. In 1960, he and his wife set sail on the Maasdam, at that time a liner which carried 783 First Class, 734 Tourist Class passengers for the USA to pursue further training and research in Anesthesiology at the Massachusetts General Hospital.
In 1967, he was recruited to be Chief of Anesthesiology at the Beth Israel Hospital. In 1969, he was promoted to Professor of Anesthesiology at Harvard Medical School, later being appointed to the newly established David S. Sheridan Professorship of Anesthesia and Respiratory Therapy. In 1987, he stepped down as Chief of Anesthesiology and continued his career and contributions in the fields of International Standards as they related to anesthesiology and respiratory care, chairing several different committees over the next 30 plus years.
He was a member of The Country Club in Chestnut Hill and the Somerset Club as well as the Roxbury Society for Medical Improvement. John was a longtime member of the Old North Bridge Hounds and will also be remembered as a keen horseman.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Tessa (Waller) Hedley-Whyte, a brother, Michael Hedley-Whyte, 6 nephews, 2 nieces, 6 great nieces and 10 great nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Sarah Thompson.
Relatives and friends will gather for John's funeral service on Friday, March 20th at 11:30 am in St. Anne's in-the-Fields Episcopal Church, 147 Concord Road, Lincoln, MA, with a reception immediately following. A private burial service is planned on Saturday, March 21st at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Concord, MA.
