Dr. Joan E. (McHugh) Dee, Ed.D., age 84, of Concord, formerly of West Newton, died peacefully at St. Patrick's Manor in Framingham on Monday, January 21, 2019, following a long illness. She was the cherished wife for 57 years of the late Dr. Norman E. Dee, Ed.D. who died in 2015.
She was born and raised in Newton, as the daughter of the late Joseph and Esther (Walsh) McHugh. Joan graduated with the class of 1951 from Newton High School, and in 1956, earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Framingham State College. She continued her studies at Boston University, receiving a Master's of Education and an Ed.D. in Education Administration, respectively.
From 1956 to 1961, she was a Teacher in the Natick and Framingham Public Schools, before working in the Concord Public Schools from 1961 until 1970. During her tenure in Concord, Joan was the recipient of four "Outstanding Service" awards. In 1971, she began her first job at BU as Assistant to the Dean. For the following four decades, beginning in 1973, she continued to serve at BU as Associate Dean of the School of Education. She retired in 2011.
Joan and Norman's incredible love story began in the early 1950's, when the two met at a skating rink in Waltham. The couple married in 1957 and began their life together in Norman's hometown of Concord. They were both lifelong, passionate educators, and may have been the first married couple to work at Concord Public Schools when Joan taught 3rd grade while Norman taught 4th. They set an example of unconditional love and devotion to one another, and were hardly ever seen apart. Joan and Norman's Catholic faith was a pillar in their lives, as they were active parishioners at Holy Family Parish in Concord. Joan enjoyed collecting antiques and Norman was a Civil War buff. They traveled to Gettysburg and antiqued throughout New England. She was a longtime member of the Concord Lions Club, and a former member of the Massachusetts Teachers' Association and the National Education Association.
She is survived by numerous cousins including, Robert Houlihan and Mary Ford, as well as many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, and Godchildren. She was the sister-in-law of the late Marian F. Roman, Charles W. Dee, Sr., Martha M. Pagano, and James H. Dee, Jr.
Family and friends will gather for visiting hours on Friday, January 25th from 3 to 7 pm in the Dee Funeral Home, 27 Bedford Street, Concord Center. Her funeral will take place on Saturday, January 26th at 10 am from the Dee Funeral Home, followed by a funeral Mass at 11 am in Holy Family Parish, Monument Square, Concord Center.
