IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Dr. Jaok
Han
July 16, 1930 – December 28, 2020
Dr. Jaok "Jack" Han, 90, a resident of Lincoln, MA, passed away on December 28th, 2020. He was born in Nampo, Korea in 1930. As a 1951 medical school graduate of Kyung Pook National University in South Korea, he was chosen from among many internship applicants to specialize in internal medicine with a US Army hospital in Korea. His ambition to emigrate to the United States was fulfilled in 1954 after serving as a medical officer in the Korean army. He met his late wife Yangsook in 1956 while a resident at Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh, and completed his PhD at SUNY Upstate Medical Center in 1962. In 1968 he re-located to Guilderland, NY to become director of the Albany Medical Center electrocardiography department, eventually becoming Professor of Medicine at Albany Medical College, where he enjoyed a 30-year career. Dr. Han become known for his research on cardiac electrophysiology and arrythmias and served on research advisory committees for the National Institute of Health and the American Heart Association. He was a President of the American Heart Association, NY chapter in the early 1980s, and was awarded numerous research grants while authoring books and articles. After many busy years he and his wife retired and moved to the Governors Club in Chapel Hill, NC, chosen because they had developed a love for golf after taking up the game in their 60s. They read books, made many friends, and traveled to Scandinavia, the Mediterranean, China, the Caribbean, and Korea. After Yangsook's death in 2012, relocation to be closer to family brought him to The Commons in Lincoln, MA in 2016 where he focused on fitness, bocce, poker, reading, and the news. He is survived by his three children, Sylvia Han and her husband Bruce Rubenstein of Lexington, MA, Julia Han Chandler and her husband Martin Chandler of Atlanta, GA, and Andrew Han and his wife Karen Eckstein Han of Needham, MA. From his immediate family, he is survived by Donghoon Han, and his wife Bokyung, of Hawaii, and Dione Kim, and her husband Ike, of California. Jaok had seven grandchildren: Eric, Kenneth, Ryan, Cameron, Caroline, Matthew, and Martha. He would often marvel at the contrast between his early and later years; his upbringing in Korea, and that of his children and grandchildren in the US. Due to COVID restrictions, a private memorial service will be held on Friday, January 1st at 2 pm in the Dee Funeral Home. A recording of the livestream is posted below.
