James "Jim" B. Hanley, DMD of Concord, passed away peacefully at home on May 24, 2015 surrounded by his loving family. He was born November 5, 1949 to the late James B. and Olive (Wright) Hanley. Jim lived his early life in Worcester and Shrewsbury, MA. He graduated from Assumption Prep High School and Assumption College. He received his DMD degree in 1975 and a post-graduate degree in Periodontology in 1979--both from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. Jim and Marian settled in Concord MA in 1983 where they raised their family, and Jim had a private dental practice specializing in Periodontics. Jim was an active member of the Concord Rotary Club. He spent many mornings sharing coffee and stories with his "Brigham's" friends. Jim was a communicant at Our Lady Help of Christians and Holy Family parishes. Educating future dentists and improving the quality of dental education was important to Jim. For 40 years, Jim was involved with Tufts School of Dental Medicine. He began as a part-time faculty member, and after closing his practice, devoted himself full-time to dental education. Jim had a distinguished career at Tufts where he held the positions of Associate Professor of Periodontology, interim Chair of the Department of Periodontology, and Associate Dean of Clinical Affairs. During his Tufts tenure, Jim was the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including the Tufts University Provost's Award for Teaching & Service. In 2014, Jim became the Dean of the College of Dental Medicine at The University of New England. This position gave Jim particular joy and professional satisfaction. Jim was instrumental in developing cutting edge programs at the College. With his strong leadership and direction, the school successfully passed the dental school accreditation process with glowing results. A scholarship in Jim's name is being established at the College of Dental Medicine. Jim was a Diplomate of The American Board of Periodontology and a graduate of the American Dental Education Association Leadership Institute. He was a member of the American Academy of Periodontology, the American Dental Education Association, the American Dental Association, and the Maine & Massachusetts Dental Associations. Jim served as a site visitor for the Commission on Dental Accreditation and on the board of directors of the Eastern Dental Insurance Company. In addition, he was a Fellow of the International College of Dentists, the American College of Dentists, and the Academy of Dental Sciences, and he was a member of Omicron Kappa Upsilon Honorary Dental Society. Jim was passionate about rowing. He was a member of the Riverside Boat Club for over 40 years and served as both President and Trustee. As soon as the ice melted on the Charles River, you would find Jim out on the water as the sun rose. Jim enjoyed competing in regattas, especially The Head of the Charles every October. Above all, Jim's greatest joy in life was his family. Jim was married to the love of his life, Marian (Pope) Hanley for 39 years. He was a devoted and loving father to Patricia Bruso and her husband Michael, Maureen Willett and her husband Bryan and Mary Ryan and her husband Patrick. Adored Dado of Michael Bruso, Elise Bruso, Olivia Ryan, and Colin Ryan. Loving brother of Kathleen Warwick and her husband John. Devoted nephew of Phyllis Wright. Cherished son-in-law of Dr. Albert and Margaret Kennedy. Beloved brother-in-law of Eileen and Gerard Foley, Lawrence and Donna Pope, Thomas and Patricia Pope, and Joseph and Parke Kennedy. He also leaves behind many loved nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. A Funeral Mass was celebrated Thursday, May 28, 2015 at Holy Family Parish, Concord MA. Burial was in St. Bernard's Cemetery, Concord. In lieu of flowers contributions in his memory may be made to the charity of your choice.
