Dr. John F. Flavin, a retired Concord dentist, died at home on June 25th. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Evelyn (Kaplan) Flavin and five children: Barbara Richardson and her husband Governor Bill Richardson of Santa Fe, NM; Dorothy Gardner and her husband Stephen of Belfast, ME; Jane Walsh and her husband Bill of Albuquerque, NM; Nancy Lord and her husband Ben of Atlanta, GA; and John Flavin of Reston, VA; five grandchildren, and one great grandchild. A life-long resident of Concord, he attended Concord schools, Harvard College, and Tufts School of Dental Medicine. After service in World War II where he served as a dental officer, he returned to Concord where he practiced until his retirement in 1986. He was a member of Concord Country Club where he served as former Club President and club champion. His golfing memberships included the New England Seniors and Hickory Shafts. His service to the town included memberships on the Board of Health, Library Committee, and the Recreation Committee. Viewing hours will be held on Thursday, June 30, 2011 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at Dee Funeral Home in Concord. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 1 at Holy Family Parish, Monument Square, Concord Center followed by burial in St. Bernard's Cemetery, Concord. Contributions in his memory maybe made to the John F. Flavin Caddy Scholarship Fund, C/O Concord Country Club, 246 Old Road to 9 Acre Corner, Concord, MA 01742. Interment will follow in the family burial plot in St. Bernard's Cemetery, Bedford Street, Concord, MA. Concord's town flag will fly at half staff on Friday in honor of Dr. Flavin's service to his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII.
