Dr. Donald E. Paul, PhD, 81, formerly of Carlisle and Stoneham, died Sunday, March 28, 2010 at Meadow Green Nursing Home in Waltham. He was the longtime companion of Betsy Mark of Lexington.
Born in Alton, Illinois on August 17, 1928 he was the son of the late Harold E. and Nelle C. (Donaldson) Paul. He received a full scholarship to the University of Illinois, Champaign, Illinois, and attended graduate school at the University of California at Berkeley and Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, where he earned a PhD in Chemistry. He later received an executive management degree from Harvard Business School. Dr. Paul worked as a research chemist and business consultant for many years before retiring in 1985.
He was the author of a number of scientific papers, including five on free-radical kinetics of interest to combustion technology, and is holder of two patents. He was a longtime member of the American Chemical Society, American Association for the Advancement of Science, Chemical Marketing Research Association, and Sigma XI.
He is survived by four children, Chris E. Duval of San Mateo, CA, Lise A. Paul of Watertown, J. Lorelle Wilson of Marlborough, Connecticut and David E. Paul of Matteson, Illinois; 1 sister, Marianne Turnbull of Grayslake, Illinois; 3 grandchildren, Yossi Duval, Lucien Delgutte and Elizabeth Wilson; 2 nephews, Paul and John and 1 niece, Donna.
A memorial service was held on Saturday, June 5th at 1 p.m. in the Payson Park Church, 365 Belmont Street, Belmont, MA
Intermentfollowed immediately after the service in Green Cemetery, Carlisle, Massachusetts.
