Dr. Charles A. Letteri passed away in Concord, MA on February 16, 2019, after a brief but fierce battle with lymphoma.
Charles was born in Brooklyn, New York on December 19, 1933 to Charles and Edith Letteri.
Charles was a proud graduate of Bishop Loughlin High School, Brooklyn, New York and he recieved his B.A. from St. Francis College, his M.A. from St. John's University and his Phd. from Syracuse University. He was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship in 1985 for his research and work in cognitive psychology, as well as an Honorary Doctorate in 1990, based on his work from the University of Helsinki, Finland.
Charles began his lifelong career in education as a high school teacher in Flushing, New York. Moving to Vermont in 1966, Charles briefly taught at the Winooski High School, and then moved to the Model City Program, writing development grants for the City of Winooski. Based on his grant writing success, Charles was recruited by the University of Vermont, Burlington, Vermont, where he became a tenured Associate Professor with the College of Education and Social Science, and taught until his retirement and named to the Emeriti Faculty in 1995.
In addition to his professional accolades, Charles was a scholar of life. Every interest he had, he delved in and mastered. He was a gifted artist working in a multitude of mediums and styles, a fantastic fisherman, marksmen, and maker of snowshoes. He was a scholar of any topic he chose, be it World War I history or the art of horse racing. He was a fantastic cook and the best biscuit maker.
Charles's wife of 62 years, Adrienne (Bussi) Letteri accompanied Charles in all their adventures. From their first meeting at the university dance, to raising four children together and 35 years of life in Vermont, to living in Colorado and traveling the United States by camper for 10 years, and settling in Concord MA in 2007.
Charles is survived by Adrienne, their four children and their spouses, seven grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The Letteri family extends their greatest appreciation and thank you's to the nursing staff, and social workers at Emerson Hospital in Concord MA, to Dr. Shri and Dr. Amin for their kind care during his brief illness.
Relatives and friends will gather for his memorial service in the Farrar Chapel of the Dee Funeral Home, 27 Bedford Street, Concord Center on Saturday, May 4th at 12:30 pm. Private interment will be at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Concord.
