Douglas W. Barrus, 87, a longtime resident of Boxborough, passed away at his home on September 9th, 2022. Born November 10, 1934 in Springfield, MA to Walter D. Barrus and Winnifred (Wright) Barrus, he grew up in Holyoke. After serving in the US Army from 1953 to 1956, he received a Bachelor of Science from American International College in Springfield, a Master of Education from Springfield College in Springfield and a Master of Business Administration from Anna Maria College in Paxton. He worked as the treasurer and tax collector for the City of Methuen until his retirement in 1998. Previously he had worked for the Acton-Boxborough Regional School District as Treasurer, as well as several colleges.
He is survived by his son David Barrus and wife Donna Barrus of Marion, son Stephen Barrus and partner Fred Furnari of Roslindale, granddaughter Molly Barrus and husband Nathan Murphy of Norwood, grandson Michael Barrus and partner Danielle Boissoneau of South Boston, and his sister Suzanne O'Donaghy of Columbia, MO. He was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years Sally Barrus and his partner Yvonne Burdette of Chelmsford.
He was known by all for his generosity, his affability, and his warm smile. He enjoyed nature walks, reading, traveling and dancing.
Family members gathered for a private burial service at Forestdale Cemetery, Holyoke, Massachusetts.
Arrangements are under the care of Dee Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Concord.
