Obituary

Dorrit Molony, of Concord, MA, beloved mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, passed away on December 26, 2018. She was 97. Born in Vienna, Austria, Dorrit fled following the Nazi takeover of Austria in 1938. As a teenager on her own for two years in England, she was fortunate to book passage on one of the last passenger ships to cross the Atlantic before the Germans unleashed the Blitz against England. Soon after landing in the United States, she began university studies in History, and graduated from Wittenberg University in Ohio in 1943. Traveling to New York, where her parents had taken refuge, she began working for a ship building company, and needing drafting skills to carry out the job, she and a small group of other women employees worked with engineering students from Rutgers University. One of those students was Donald Molony, whom she married in 1944. They were married for 64 years, and together they raised four children. From the 1950s to the 1970s, Dorrit worked as a teacher and studied in graduate programs at Rutgers University and the University of Vienna. With her family, she loved hiking, camping, and cruising, and traveled to every continent except Antarctica. Following her husband's retirement, Dorrit and Don moved to Concord, MA. They spent several months each year in Vienna, where they enjoyed the opera and the philharmonic. Dorrit is survived by her four children: Kathleen, Barbara, Donald, and Ronald; seven grandchildren: Julia Molony, Catherine Turley-Molony, Anna Molony, Elizabeth Hollingsworth, Robert Molony, John Hollingsworth, and Gregory Molony; and great grandchildren Alice and Caroline O'Neill. Her husband Donald and grandson Henry predeceased her. Relatives and friends may gather for her funeral service on Saturday, February 23rd at 1 pm in the Farrar Chapel of the Dee Funeral Home, 27 Bedford Street, Concord Center. Officiating will be The Rev. Dr. Jean Vandergrift of the Trinitarian Congregational Church in Concord. Burial will immediately follow the service at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Concord. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to Wittenberg University, 200 W. Ward Street, Springfield, OH 45504 or to the Concord Council on Aging, 1276 Main Street, Concord, MA 01742. Arrangements are under the care of Dee Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Concord.
