Obituary

Dorris Marie (Carter) Fairburn, of Concord, age 95, died March 8th. She was the wife of 62 years of George William Fairburn, who predeceased her by 48 days. She was the beloved mother of Doreen McCabe and husband Dennis, of Westford, and Janice Nickerson and husband Wayne, of Kingston; and much loved grandmother of Matthew Fairburn Carr and Holly Susan Nickerson. Mrs. Fairburn also leaves her sister, Elizabeth Hatfield, of Ocala, FLA, sister -in- law, Lynda Fairburn, of Tavares, FLA, sister-in-law Claire Hamilton and husband Daniel, of North Attleboro, and brother-in-law Donald Fairburn and wife Judith of Wilmington, North Carolina. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Born in North Scituate December 28, 1917 she was the daughter of Agnes Marguerite (Davis) and Wilbur Austin Carter, both long time Cape Cod families. Mrs. Fairburn was a descendent of Richard Warren, and Francis Cooke who arrived on the Mayflower. As a young child she lived at the Shaker Society in Alfred, Maine where she attended Shaker school, and was under the loving care of Sister Mildred Barker, who later became Eldress of the Shaker Society at Sabbathday Lake. Mrs. Fairburn remained in close contact with the Shakers at Sabbathday Lake until her death. She taught Sunday school at Trinitarian Congregational Church in Concord and planned the flowers for Sundays services and holidays for more than two decades. An aesthetician for Coty Cosmetics at Filenes before her marriage, she worked in Concord's Tri-Con Gift Shop in Wright's Tavern until the shop closed. Mrs. Fairburn enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and eastern Canada visiting National Parks and landmarks. She also enjoyed reading, bird watching and family genealogy. In her younger years, she was an avid gardener, and learned to downhill ski in her fifties. An active member of the Concord Council on Aging for over 30 years until her recent illness, she enjoyed taking many trips around the country with fellow COA members. She also volunteered transportation, and as a visitor, to those who were at home unable to get out. She loved her family above all else, and the Town of Concord, of which she was a resident for over 60 years. Service: Services were private.
