Dorothy Jane (Ireland) Rosa, age 91, of Concord, died peacefully on Friday, February 13, 2015 surrounded by her loving family.
Born in New Brunswick, Canada on Dec. 19, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Elbert & Effie (Roberts) Ireland. She grew up in northern Maine as one of 10 brothers and sisters, attended school in Mapleton, ME, volunteered for the USO during WWII, and moved to Cambridge, MA shortly after high school graduation to join a sister in work at the Harvard Faculty Club where she served notable figures such as John Kenneth Galbraith. Country girl met city boy, she married her Cambridge born and bred Jim on May 6, 1950, and the couple lived in Cambridge, MA until moving to Concord, MA in 1960 with their two children.
Dot, ever the homemaker, created a secure, cozy, sparkling home for her family and resided in her Concord home for 50 years until moving to Concord Park's Assisted Living facility, and, most recently, to Concord Health Care Center where she lived out the remainder of her days with family close by.
Favorite memories include childhood days in rural Maine: basket weaving taught by a Native American neighbor, sledding under a full moon on her father's handcrafted toboggans, pans of homemade bread from the woodstove, cellar shelves lined with canned goods from the family garden, and mother Effie's books and stories and the neighbors who gathered around to hear them.
Dorothy leaves a daughter, Sandra J. Peirce and her husband Allan of Acton, MA, a son, William B. Rosa and his wife JoAnne of Blackstone, MA, three grandchildren-Heather Jayne, James, and Bryan, 2 great-grandchildren-Ava Jayne and John, a sister Beulah DeLong of Ft. Myers, Florida, sister-in-law Edith Sparre and husband Carl of Lexington, MA, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, James V. Rosa, in 1987, as well as by 8 brothers and sisters.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, February 21st from 11 am to 12 noon followed by a funeral service in the Farrar Chapel of the Dee Funeral Home, 27 Bedford Street, Concord Center at 12 noon. The Rev. Austin H. Fleming, pastor of Holy Family Parish at St. Bernard's Church will officiate. Dorothy will be interred with her husband, James, in St. Bernard's Cemetery, Concord.
