Obituary

Donald "Duke" Sloan, 81, of Acton and formerly of Concord, died peacefully on Tuesday, February 8, 2022 at Emerson Hospital in Concord. He had been surrounded by the love and comfort of family and friends during the last days of his life. Born in Concord on January 28, 1941, he was the son of the late Donald and Agnes (Mullen) Sloan. He was a 1959 graduate of Concord High School. He was employed for many years as a Postal Employee for the Concord Post Office and Prison Guard at MCI Concord, where he retired from both positions. During retirement years, he worked as an Estimator for Nashoba Paving in Westford. Duke had many hobbies and interests. He was a diehard fan of the Patriots and the Red Sox. His recreational activities such as boating, and beaching at Good Harbor and the Cape, were just a few. He travelled extensively to Ireland and Florida. He loved to just go for a drive whether it be cross country or on the main streets and back roads of New England. He was an avid reader and a historian by rights. Duke's favorite pastime was sitting on his back deck with family and friends, sharing a beer or a cup of coffee, discussing current events and reminiscing about times gone by. He was the beloved father of Donald Sloan and his wife Beth (Silvio) of Acton, Michael Sloan of Geneva, IL, Timothy Sloan of San Diego, CA, and John Sloan and his wife Nancy (Seaburg) of Townsend. Duke was the proud grandfather of Patrick Sloan, Jennifer (Sloan) O'Brien and her husband Brendan and Andrew Sloan, and great-grandfather to Bennett O'Brien. He also leaves one brother, Peter Sloan and his wife Sally of Ayer, one sister, Ann Taylor and her husband Thomas of Rochester, NY, and a beloved cousin, Janice Larkins of Acton. Predeceased by his companion for many years, Martha Smith of Acton, he also leaves her son, Dean Smith as well as several cousins, nieces and nephews. Duke's family gathered for a private service in the Dee Funeral Home. A celebration of his life will be announced at a later date. Burial will take place at St. Bernard's Cemetery in Concord. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to Emerson Hospital Health Care Foundation , 133 Old Road to Nine Acre Corner, Concord, MA 01742. Arrangements are under the care of Dee Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Concord.
