David Keyes, 71, of Brockton died January 10, 2013, in Brockton Hospital after a hard struggle with cancer. He leaves his wife, Barbara (Schlegel) Keyes of Brockton; a son, Simon W. Keyes of Montague; a daughter, Kathryn R. Hall of Newton; two stepsons, Keith A. Hathaway of Middleboro and Kurt W. Hathaway of Charlotte, N.C.; a stepdaughter, Lois A. Pawlowski of Raleigh, N.C., three brothers, Jonathan M. Keyes of Concord, Henry W. Keyes of Worcester and George S. Keyes of Waldoboro, Maine; three grandchildren; nephews and nieces. He was born in Boston, son of Henry M. and Mary (Walcott) Keyes, and was raised in Concord. He later lived in Pepperell and about 10 years in Townsend. He lived 24 years in Brockton. He graduated from Tabor Academy in Marion in 1960 and attended Wake Forest College in Winston-Salem, N.C. He graduated from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, in 1967 with a degree in wood technology. He was a sales representative of wood and printing products for many years, and was still working part-time until recently. He worked for West Virginia Pulp & Paper Co. (WESTVACO) and Weyhaeuser Co. for many years. He then sold printing plates and cutting dies for 20 years for Matthews Int'l Corp., covering New England and eastern New York State. After that, he worked for FlexOgraphic Printing Plate Co. in Worcester part-time until recently. He was an enthusiastic sportsman and gardener, tending flourishing flower and vegetable gardens. He shared the bounty of the latter with his neighbors.He restored two antique automobiles virtually from scratch. The first was a 1933 Morgan, a British three-wheeler. The second was a 1965, Shelby Cobra, a sports convertible. He also restored several motorcycles, including a triumph and a Norton. After cremation, a private graveside service will be held in the spring in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, Concord. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Cancer Research, UMass Memorial Foundation, 1Biotech, S-100, 365 Plantation St., Worcester, MA 01605.
