David Straw Huston, 90, a life-long Concord resident, died Tuesday May 31, 2016 in Framingham following a long struggle with vascular dementia and Alzheimer's Disease. He was the beloved husband of 40 years of Beverly (Johnson) Huston.
Born in Concord on September 9, 1925 Mr. Huston was the son of the late Henry H. and Doris (Straw) Huston. He was the father of Peter D. Huston and his companion Barbara DeSousa of Hiram, ME and the late Janet F. Huston, stepfather of Sandra Andreson and her husband Dr. James of Littleton and Gary Brackett and his wife Betsey of West Chesterfield, NH and grandfather of Ryan Brackett, Elizabeth Marini and Kate Brackett. He was also the brother of the late Jeannette Dahl and Carol Huston.
Mr. Huston attended Concord public schools and was a 1943 graduate of Concord High School. During World War II, he served in the United States Army in Europe as a company bugler.
Mr. Huston was a graduate of New England Conservatory of Music in Boston and later received a Masters degree in Music from Boston University. He taught music at several private schools prior to being asked by Roger Fenn to begin and direct a music program at The Fenn School in Concord. Well known to many as the head of the Fenn School marching band, he led that band in Concord's parades throughout the many decades, retiring from Fenn in 1993.
David was a member of the First Parish in Concord, where he served as Director of Music and choir director from 1965 to 1994. He then directed the First Parish Bell Choir, from 1995 to 2006. He was also was a member of the Concord Orchestra, serving as principal oboist from 1953 until his retirement.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday July 16th, at 11 A.M. at The First Parish in Concord, 20 Lexington Road, Concord Center.
Concord's town flag will be flown at half-staff on Saturday July 16th in recognition of Mr. Huston's service to his country during World War II.
