Obituary

David Field Brownell, of Concord, the beloved husband for 60 years of Ann (Strecker) Brownell, passed away at home on July 17, 2021 surrounded by his family. He was 82. Dave was born in Boston on June 5, 1939, as the son of the late Bartlett and Helena (Leonard) Brownell. His growing up life was spent by the sea in Marion, MA, where he nurtured his love of sailing and all things New England. He graduated from Wareham, HS and then Marietta College in Ohio, where he met the love of his life Ann Strecker. Joining the Air Force in 1962 brought Dave and Ann back to New England where they settled in Concord, raising their family and putting down roots in the community. Dave spent his professional career working for IBM. In 1995, he fulfilled a longtime entrepreneurial dream and, along with his wife Ann, opened Belmont Toys in Belmont, MA which they operated until 2008. Dave was happiest when he was busy with projects and spending time with family & friends. He was a founding member of FOPAC (51 Walden, Inc.) and spent his retirement years serving on the Board and happily completing numerous projects for the building he loved. He and Ann created a beautiful life together. They took many memorable trips by land & sea; spent summers at their favorite spot "The Land" on Newfound Lake with the Sminell gang (Smith & Brownell families) and relished time spent with close friends and extended family. Dave adored his grandchildren and was simply the most amazing Dad that Susan and Gage could ever ask for. Dave will be remembered for his warmth & generosity of spirit, his warm hugs and infectious smile, unfailing work ethic, willingness to step up at a moment's notice with a helping hand and his every abiding love and support of family and friends. Dave never knew a stranger. In addition to his wife, Dave is survived by his daughter Susan Kulp and her husband George of North Haven, CT, his son Gage Brownell and his wife Emily of Providence, RI. He was the adoring Poppy to grandchildren Griffin Kulp, Jo Kulp & Casey Wallace. He was predeceased by his sister Susan & brother Phil Brownell, and is survived by his siblings Linda Marini (Jeff), Steve Brownell (Carol), Tom Brownell (Stephanie) and extended family and friends. He will be laid to rest alongside his dear Concord "Forever Friends" at Cocktail Point where we are sure that much merriment will ensue for lifetimes to come. Relatives and friends are invited to gather for a funeral procession forming at the Dee Funeral Home, 27 Bedford Street, Concord Center on Thursday, August 5th at 10 am, followed by a graveside service with U.S. Air Force military honors at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery. A memorial gathering celebrating Dave's life will follow from 11 am until 2 pm at 51 Walden Performing Arts Center, 51 Walden Street, Concord Center. Concord's Town Flag will fly at half-staff on Thursday, August 5th in recognition of Dave's service to our country in the United States Air Force. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the organization he loved: 51 Walden, PO Box 251, Concord, MA 01742 or Emerson Hospital where he received excellent and compassionate care: Emerson Health Care Foundation, 133 Old Road to Nine Acre Corner, Concord, MA 01742. Arrangements are under the care of Dee Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Concord.
