Obituary

Clifford A. Bean, Bump, 81, of Concord and Lake Winnipesaukee, Meredith, NH, died August 28th after a long battle with cancer of the esophagus. During his last days he was able to spend time with family and friends at his most favorite place, Bear Island at the lake. Cliff was born in Danvers, MA, son of Theodore and Lucille Bean. He graduated from Holten High School in Danvers, MA in 1947, from Colby College, Waterville, ME in 1951, and Harvard Business School, Cambridge, MA in 1953. He served as an officer in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. In his early employment years he worked at Raytheon Company and GTE Sylvania. From 1972-1994, Cliff was employed at Arthur D. Little, Inc., Cambridge, MA, as a senior consultant in telecommunications. In his retirement he continued to practice consulting privately. Cliff, Bump, was deeply dedicated to Colby College. While at college he was a founding member of the Colby Eight a capella group. He devoted his time to organizing many reunions of the 8 over decades. He was known as Mr. Colby for the energy he put into serving as an interviewer of prospective students, chair of the Alumni Council, Trustee, and class President of his 50th reunion. Cliff was very involved in his local community. He was well known for his fantastic singing voice and his talent on stage with the Concord Players, performing roles in many musicals. His voice was also heard in the choir at the First Parish Church and on Christmas Eve leading carols in the town center. He was a founding member of The Sounds of Concord, championship barbershop chorus (SPEBSQSA) and was the tenor in the widely popular River City All Stars quartet. Recently, he worked with the Harvard Business School community action program (CAP), for the Blue Hill Observatory, the Sudbury Valley Trustees, and the Minuteman National Historic Park. Cliff had a great love of the outdoors that he shared with his family and friends as an avid skier, hiker, sailor, conservationist and world traveler. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Dorothy Dorrie Bean of Concord, MA, his daughter Meredith Eley and her husband Donald of Blue Hill, ME, his daughter Deborah Sass of South Lake Tahoe, CA, his daughter Julia Bean and her husband Rodney Fuller of Underhill, VT, his honorary son Elias Towe of Pittsburg, PA and four grandsons, Chris, Conor, Sam and Ben, and one granddaughter, Kate.
