Obituary

Clare Harwood Nunes, 84, died at Emerson Hospital in Concord on Thursday, January 10, 2019, after succumbing to acute pneumonia. She is survived by her three children: Geoffrey Jr., Jake, and Maggie, as well as seven grandchildren: Adaliana, Emmett, Nicole, Hadleigh, Alex, Samantha, and Claudia. Clare's wit, erudition, and warmth illuminated the lives of friends, students and family. She was generous as well as vivacious and served as "the star to every wand'ring bark," for young people seeking comfort or advice. Those lucky enough to know her as a friend, wife, mother, teacher, and colleague recall her hilarious ripostes, irreverent stories, and empathetic advice. We will miss Clare, but celebrate the kindness that spread outwards from her, touching all who knew her. Clare Harwood was born in Dedham Massachusetts on December 17, 1934, the daughter of John and Margaret Harwood. Clare graduated from Chatham Hall School in 1952 and earned a Bachelor's degree in Latin and English from Bryn Mawr College. After graduation she moved to New York City where she worked for the Oxford University Press and where she met Geoff Nunes, whom she married in September of 1958. In 1966 Geoff and Clare, with three children in tow, moved to Princeton, New jersey. Clare stayed at home, raising her children until 1971 when she entered a doctoral program at Princeton University, earning a PhD in English Literature. Clare Had to commute from Lincoln, Massachusetts to finish her degree after the family relocated there in 1976. After receiving her degree in 1979, Clare accepted a position at University of Massachusetts, Boston, where she taught freshman composition for two years. In 1981, Clare found her true calling: teaching English at Concord Academy. She recalled her 15 years teaching there warmly, considering them some of the happiest of her life. In 1988 Clare was the first faculty member to be selected by the senior class to be the graduation speaker. After retiring in 1996, Clare worked as a volunteer, tutoring students at Cambridge Rindge and Latin High School, having moved to Cambridge four years prior. In her last years, Clare lived with Geoff at Fox Hill Village in Westwood, Massachusetts and then Newbury Court in Concord after Geoff's death. A memorial service will be held in Concord Academy's chapel at 3:00 PM on Saturday, February 9th with a reception to follow at the Colonial Inn in Concord. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Concord Academy, 166 Main Street, Concord, MA 01742 or the Cambridge School Volunteers, 459 Broadway, Cambridge, MA 02138.
