Clara R Maslow, born Trenton, N.J., 1914, died June 1st, 2014 after several days in the hospital. She lived a long and full life. She grew up in NJ, the daughter of Russian immigrants. She attended the New Jersey College for Women (now Rutgers), where she studied botany. She wanted to be a doctor, but could not afford medical school. After college, she got a master's degree at Columbia University, where she trained to teach deaf children. She then worked for several years in residential schools for the deaf and blind, before getting married. She later taught language skills in public elementary school, then, in her 60's, pursued a PhD at Boston University in psycholinguistics. She developed evaluations for children with learning disabilities, worked as an advocate for special education students, and as an educational consultant into her 70's.
She was also an avid gardener, cook, seamstress, traveler, reader and writer. In her 90's, after the death of her beloved Bernie, she self-published four books: a political memoir, "The Tapestry of Our Lives Torn with Fear: Living Through the McCarthy Witch Hunts", a book of her poems, "When The Lilacs Last Bloomed I Mourn?d; And With Songs I Perfume The Grave Of Him I Love: POEMS 1998-2008", a memoir of her father, "Obsessive Memories: Remembering My Father Yalek Who Never Told Me about Love", and a collection of newspaper columns written by her son, the late journalist Jonathan Maslow, which she compiled and edited, "Schlepper".
She lived independently, at home, with the generous help of neighbors, friends, and family, and with her mind intact, until the week before she died. Those who knew her, knew her as a feisty, passionate, intelligent, politically savvy and creative woman. She was deeply concerned with the struggles of ordinary people around the world, as well as for the earth and the animals.
She was predeceased by her husband, Bernard Maslow of Concord, MA and her son, Jonathan Maslow of Passiac and Dennisville, NJ. She is survived by her brother, Jack Rosenberg of Tinton Falls, NJ, her daughter, Jane Maslow Cohen of Austin, TX, her granddaughters, Emily Cohen of Cummington, MA, Jemma Sager and Mariah Sager of Austin, TX, her great-granddaughter, Talya Eiseman of Cummington, MA, her niece, Abby Blatt of New York City, and her daughter-in-law, Liliya Khobotkova of Passiac, NJ.
