Christine M. (Makrys) Straggas, age 94, a longtime Concord resident, died peacefully at home, on Tuesday, March 2, 2021. She was the beloved wife of the late Stephen Straggas who died in 2001. After being introduced to him by her sister, Helen, they wed on September 27, 1953, and shared nearly fifty years of loving and devoted marriage.
She was born in Malden on July 10, 1926 to her late parents, Apostle and Photene (Cantelis) Makrys. Her family moved to Concord when she was two years old, where she attended Peter Bulkeley School. After returning to Malden for a few years, the family settled in Concord in 1941. Christine was a member of Concord High School's class of 1944.
For several years following graduation, she worked at Peter Bulkeley School as Secretary to the Principal. Later, she was employed at Concord Reformatory as a Bookkeeper, and as a Secretary at the Registry of Motor Vehicles in Boston.
Christine will be remembered as an avid reader, with a particular interest in fiction and historical novels, especially books about World War II. She followed local and world events by faithfully reading the newspaper and watching the news. She was a devoted New England Patriots and Boston Red Sox fan who also loved knitting, needlepoint, sewing and baking. Her hand knit blankets, hats and mittens continue to be cherished by her entire family. She was known for her delicious Greek cookies, koulourakia and kourambiethes, which were enjoyed by generations of relatives and friends. Christine was also an excellent gardener and took great pride in nurturing her many plants and flowers.
Christine leaves behind her devoted children, Constance Straggas of Concord, Catherine Dedo and her husband Drew of Philadelphia, PA, Jonathan Straggas of Concord, and Christina Perri and her husband John of Chula Vista, CA, her grandchildren, Nichole, Christopher, Stephanie and Julianna Perri, and Joshua Vallecillos, as well as her sister, Helen Alexis of West Newton. She was the mother of the late Cynthia "Cyndi" Straggas who recently predeceased her in November of 2020.
Family and friends will gather for a private funeral service at Taxiarchae/Archangels Greek Orthodox Church in Watertown. Burial will follow at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Concord.
