Christine Manns died unexpectedly on August 16, 2017. She was open water swimming in Walden Pond when a medical emergency occurred, and died later in the emergency room without regaining consciousness, but with her husband at her side.
She was born Christine Anne Sully on August 22, 1940, in North London. As a single woman, she made a career in PR, working with words as she loved to do. In 1977, she followed her husband to be, David Manns, to Massachusetts and was married in Arlington. They moved to their current home in Lexington in 1981.
Christine took the delayed opportunity to study at university and deepen her knowledge of English literature, graduating summa cum laude from Suffolk University and later developing her knowledge and interest in history and art, especially medieval art and architecture, taking graduate courses in the Radcliffe Seminars series.
Christine loved the outdoor life, hiking and swimming in particular, and above all she loved her amazingly wide circle of family and friends both in the US and UK, to whom she devoted much thought and energy. She also loved to travel and had only recently returned from a safari trip in Tanzania.
She is survived by her husband David, siblings Angela and Robert with their families, and many cousins.
Cremation will take place privately. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Walden Woods Project www.walden.org
A gathering in celebration of her life will be organized later.
