Charmian Southworth Griffin Clark, 93, a long-time resident of Concord, MA, died peacefully on Friday, July 2, 2021 at the Care One Nursing Home in Concord. She was wife of the late John Clark, Jr. who died in 1996.
Born in Chevy Chase, MD on December 16, 1927, she was the daughter of Bulkley Southworth Griffin and Isabel (Kinnear) Griffin, who founded the Griffin-Larrabee News Bureau in Washington, DC. She was the only granddaughter of Solomon Bulkley Griffin of Springfield, MA, for many years managing editor of the Springfield Republican, and a direct descendant of Peter Bulkeley, a founder of Concord.
Charmian attended Sidwell Friends School in Washington, DC, and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, class of '49, with an AB degree in history. Later she earned a Masters in Library Science from the University of Massachusetts.
Charmian married John Clark, Jr., of Fayetteville, Arkansas, in 1951 at the Chevy Chase Presbyterian Church. After living in Fayetteville, Concord, and New Canaan, CT, in 1966 they returned to Concord, where Charmian has lived ever since.
Charmian loved the Friends of the Concord Free Public Library, and one year ran their annual Book Sale. She had life-long loves of reading, birding, beaches and the ocean, and music, beginning with collecting Bessie Smith and Billie Holiday 78 RPM records. Favorite vacation areas included Bethany Beach, DE, in the 1960s and Martha's Vineyard, MA from the 1970s on.
Survivors include her sons Stephen Clark of Concord and Jay Clark of Lexington and her daughter Nancy Clark of Oak Bluffs MA. Her grandchildren are Christopher B. Clark of Framingham MA, Natalie Clark of Raymond NH, Christopher M. Clark of Portland ME, Patrick Clark of Alaska, and Kirstin Clark of Topsfield MA. Her great-grandchildren are Leo Clark and Bonnie McCloskey.
A memorial service will be planned at a later date. Private burial is in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, Concord.
