Obituary

Charles L. Poulos, 94, longtime Lincoln resident, died Wednesday, March 9, 2011, at home. He was the beloved husband of Sophie (Pannos) Poulos. Born in Alestena, Greece, on April 16, 1916, he was the son of the late Louis and Diane (Panne) Poulos. As a young boy, he attended schools in Greece and then immigrated to the United States through Ellis Island. In 2004, he received the Ellis Island Award. During World War II, Mr. Poulos was a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army stationed in Northern France and the German Rhineland. He was present at the Battle of the Bulge and also a recipient of a Purple Heart. He was a member of the American Legion George Menichios Post 324. After the war, Mr. Poulos returned to Cambridge where he owned various businesses and established himself as a successful real estate entrepreneur. A civic-minded man, he also became a member of the Cambridge Grand Royal Arch Chapter; the Joseph Warren Soley Lodge; the Mount Olive Lodge AF and AM; and the Aleppo Shriners. A resident of Lincoln since 1961, Mr. Poulos was an active member of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, Lexington, MA, and the founder of St. Athanasius Greek Orthodox Church, Arlington, MA. On the National level, he was a founding member of the Archbishop Iakovos Leadership 100 Endowment Fund and awarded St. Andrew medals for outstanding service to the Greek Orthodox Church of the Americas. He humbly received the title of Archon Depoutatos and membership to The Order of St. Andrew from the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople. In addition to his beloved wife, Sophie, he is survived by his daughter, Diane Poulos Harpell and her husband, George; his son, Theodore Poulos, and his wife, Pam; and his son, Nicholas Poulos, and his wife, Lisa; and many friends and relatives. He was predeceased by his son, Charles L. Poulos, Jr. Memorials: Memorial Contributions in Mr. Poulos'memory may be made to the charity of one's choice. Visitation: Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, March 13, 2:00-5:00 pm in St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, 17 Meriam Street, Lexington, MA. Service: The funeral service will be held Monday, March 14, at 11:00am at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, Lexington, MA, followed by burial at the Lincoln Cemetery, Lincoln, MA.
