Charles A. (Bert) Fowler, of Concord, Massachusetts, died on November 7, 2016 at 95 years old.
Born in Centralia, Illinois, he was the son of the late Clarence and Bess Fowler and the husband of Catherine (Grimes) Fowler. An honors graduate of the University of Illinois in Engineering Physics, Bert worked at MIT Radiation Lab as part of teams that developed the GCA radar landing system and the first air traffic control system during World War II. He continued working with radar and in other capacities in the defense industry and served for four years as the Deputy Director of Defense Research and Engineering for Tactical Systems in the U.S. Defense Department. He subsequently held executive positions at Raytheon and The Mitre Corporation and worked as a private consultant.
Bert was a fellow of the IEEE, AAAS, and AIAA; a member of the National Academy of Engineering; served for decades on the Defense Science Board and the Defense Intelligence Agency Science and Technology Advisory Board; and participated in numerous other advisory boards and panels. He authored or co-authored an extensive list of papers and received numerous awards including the Department of Defense Medal for Distinguished Public Service, the Defense Intelligence Agency Director's Award and Medal, and the IEEE AESS Pioneer Award.
He gave his time freely to many civic and professional organizations and was loved and respected by all he knew. Bert was adventurous and loved life. He was a premier storyteller and his sense of humor was legendary. He enjoyed golf, tennis, squash, and skiing, and traveled to a variety of destinations with Catherine and friends. Bert and Catherine celebrated their 73rd wedding anniversary shortly before he died.
Bert is survived by his wife, Catherine; his daughters Patricia Paul of Belmont, Massachusetts and Mary Leathem and her husband Myron Leathem of Agawam, Massachusetts; his grandchildren William (Brad) Paul of Turner's Falls, Massachusetts and Trevor Leathem and Kathryn Leathem of Agawam, Massachusetts; and his sister Marianna Fowler of Macomb, Illinois, all of whom were devoted to him.
Funeral service and burial will be private.
