Obituary

Catherine (Themistocles) Pappas passed away in Boston on January 28, due to complications of a stroke. A businesswoman and philanthropist, Mrs. Pappas was born in Southbridge, Massachusetts in 1923. Daughter of Peter and Claire Themistocles, she graduated from Southbridge High School and the Katherine Gibbs School. In 1953, she married Stephen E. Pappas and over the next forty years they lived in Boston, Cape Cod and Quincy, starting restaurants and real estate businesses that they ran together. Among the many places where they travelled, Athens, Istanbul, Killington, Vermont and Ogunquit, Maine held special meaning for them both. Motivated by her faith, the example of her parents, and her love of children, Mrs. Pappas believed deeply in helping people suffering from hunger and illness, in supporting research and holistic patient care, and in promoting the study and practice of the Greek Orthodox faith. Active members of the church, she and Stephen were steadfast supporters of the Boston diocese and later of Hellenic College and the Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology. After her beloved husband's death in 1995, she made leadership gifts to the Massachusetts General Hospital, the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, and Children's Hospital to advance brain tumor research and improve the treatment and quality of children with cancer and their families. For many years, she volunteered her time, talents and good spirits at the St. Francis House for homeless men and women. Both the Greek Orthodox Ladies Philoptochos Society and the Metropolis of Boston Philoptochos Society recognized Mrs. Pappas for her lifelong dedication to philanthropy and her generosity to others. Mrs. Pappas delighted in celebrating Greek Easter with family, and in telling fond stories about her parents and the family's early days in Southbridge. She is survived by her sisters, Rena Themistocles of Cambridge and Victoria Lagios of South Portland, Maine, her brother, Christopher Themistocles of Pompano Beach, Florida, and her nieces and nephews, as well as by grandnieces and grandnephews who brought her much joy in her later years. She was predeceased by her sisters Eleftheria Themistocles and Vera Biemann and her brothers Michael, Van and Samuel Themistocles. Funeral services will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory can be made to the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Boston, 162 Goddard Avenue, Brookline, MA 02445 or St. Francis House, 39 Boylston Street, Boston, MA, 02116.
