Obituary

Catherine G. "Kay" Fowler of Concord, Massachusetts, died on July 2, 2017 at 95 years old. Born in Birmingham, Alabama, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Mary Grimes. After graduating from the University of Illinois in Economics, Kay married the love of her life, Charles (Bert) Fowler, and moved to Boston where they both worked at MIT Radiation Lab during World War II. Kay's position was that of a "computer", a job that entailed using mechanical desk calculators to solve long lists of equations. The results of these calculations were compiled into tables and published for use on the battlefields by gunnery officers. After the war, Kay and Bert moved to Long Island, bought a house, and had their daughters, Pat and Mary. Kay was an active and loving mother, frequently hosting all the neighborhood children at their home. She was active in the community as a Girl Scout leader, A PTA member, and a library volunteer. As Bert made professional moves to the Pentagon in Washington and to Raytheon and Mitre in the Boston area, Kay always created a beautiful and loving home and enjoyed entertaining friends and business associates. Kay was a true Steel Magnolia, elegant and gracious but also strong, brave and adaptable. She was an excellent bridge and Scrabble player and enjoyed tennis, golf, skiing, bowling, and handcrafts. She was a true and loyal friend to many and a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Kay and Bert celebrated their 73rd wedding anniversary shortly before he died in November 2016. Kay is survived by her daughters Patricia Paul of Belmont, Massachusetts and Mary Leathem and her husband Myron Leathem of Agawam, Massachusetts; her grandchildren William (Brad) Paul of Turner's Falls, Massachusetts and Trevor Leathem and Kathryn Leathem of Agawam, Massachusetts; and her brother, John Grimes of Alexandria, Virginia, all of whom were devoted to her. She was pre-deceased by her husband, Bert. Funeral service and burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Kay's memory to Macular Degeneration Research, c/o Brightfocus Foundation, 22512 Gateway Center Drive, Clarksburg, MD 20871; www.brightfocus.org, 855-345-6637.
