Catharine (Kay) Allen, 97, formerly of Wellesley Hills, died peacefully on March 21, 2017 in Bedford, MA.
Catharine Schofield Hayes was born in Winthrop, MA, on June 7, 1919 to Joseph Daniel and Edith (Milnes) Hayes. She grew up in Newtonville, graduating from Newton High School in 1936. She spent a post-graduate year at Dana Hall School in Wellesley, then majored in religion at Mount Holyoke College and graduated in 1941. She married Charles M. Allen III in 1942, and taught first grade at the Carroll School in Waltham while he was stationed in England during World War II.
As a native New Englander, Kay was delighted when her husband's career brought them back to the Boston area after many years in upstate New York and New Jersey. The Allens were loyal supporters of the Opera Company of Boston and the Cambridge Boat Club. A lifelong figure skating enthusiast, Kay was active in the Skating Club of Boston, participating in the club's Ice Chips shows well into her sixties. She held a realtor's license and worked with Coldwell-Banker in Wellesley for many years. She also did part-time administrative work at Wellesley College. She loved tending the family house in Menauhant, Cape Cod, where she had summered as a girl.
Ever the gracious hostess, she and Charlie enjoyed entertaining friends and family in their home. Kay was an avid reader and an organizer of high school and college reunions, as well as extended family get-togethers. She loved opera, antiques, and Early American decoration. She had a great interest in her own and her husband's family genealogy and was pleased to be able to trace her ancestry through her Pennsylvania grandmother back to the American Revolution.
Kay was predeceased by her husband in 2009. She is survived by her daughters Louise Zak, of Brattleboro, VT and Nancy Foster (with Rick Foster), of Catonsville, MD; grandchildren Matthew Zak, of Orem, UT, and Emily Webb (with Ben Webb) of Brattleboro, VT, and great-granddaughters, Diana and Helen Webb, also of Brattleboro, VT. She is also survived by her brother, Joseph D. Hayes of Rye Beach, NH, and numerous nieces and nephews who were very dear to her.
Her daughters are deeply grateful to the extraordinary staff of the Ross-Worthen wing of Carleton Willard Village for their loving care of Kay for the past eight years.
A memorial gathering in Kay's honor will be private.
Condolences may be sent to Louise Zak, 132 Main St., Brattleboro, VT 05301. Gifts of remembrance may be sent to Mount Holyoke College, South Hadley, MA.
Arrangements are under the care of the Dee Funeral Home of Concord.
