Obituary

Caroline McDougal Bierer Gakenheimer, aged 86, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, passed away peacefully on the morning of Wednesday, July 24th, 2024.

Caroline was born on November 18th, 1937 in Pago Pago, Samoa, where her dad was stationed as a naval officer. She lived in new places every 2-3 years throughout her youth, including Washington, DC; Panama Canal Zone; Norfolk, VA; Harrisburg, PA; and Piedmont, CA, where she graduated from Piedmont High School.

She received her Bachelor's Degree in Anthropology from George Washington University, did PhD work at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and many years later got an MBA from Simmons College. Primarily a scholar of anthropology and archaeology, she had an insatiable curiosity about the world and its people, always eager to explore new environments and delve into the intricacies of human behavior.

While moving so frequently during her childhood made it challenging for her to set roots, it also made her extremely adaptable to change. This proved highly valuable later on, as she gamely accompanied her husband, Ralph, on trips across the globe. They lived for 7 years in Chapel Hill, NC before settling in Brookline, MA, where they raised their two daughters, and which would be their home base for the next 25 years. During that time, the family would spend Ralph's sabbatical years in Paris, France; Berkeley, CA; and Oxford, UK. Caroline and Ralph also traveled extensively from Venezuela, Germany, India, and China to Norway, Russia, the Netherlands, and the Galapagos, often opting to house-swap with colleagues and friends. Travel included a life-long dream for Caroline of returning to Alaska, where she had participated in an archeological dig in college, this time traveling along the Northwest Passage.

While she pursued and enjoyed academics, her real passions were architecture, gardening, traveling, art, reading, and cooking. Wherever she went, she brought life and beauty to her surroundings often by decorating or redesigning her homes and creating magical gardens wherever she lived.

Her adventurous spirit took her across the globe to formal gardens and ancient ruins. Her artistic talents were vast, from oil painting and creating intricate Ukrainian Easter eggs to sewing childhood clothes, quilts, and fun Halloween costumes.

She had a voracious mind and a love of puzzles and crosswords. She balanced reading the Boston Globe and National Geographic regularly with a passion for romance novels, science fiction, and a healthy dose of whimsy.

She was an exceptional cook and baker and enjoyed hosting festive dinners, bringing people together for much-anticipated Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve dinners, and Easter brunches. Even while pursuing an MBA and returning to work as a computer consultant, she continued to provide home-cooked meals every night. She would later compile her specialties, including international dishes, fresh bread, and homemade pizza as well as the family's favorite holiday treats into a cookbook for her daughters.

A dedicated volunteer, she was an active member of the League of Women Voters, served as a docent at the Arnold Arboretum, and was the Treasurer of the Martha's Vineyard Garden Club. Her generosity extended to supporting hundreds of charities.

Smart, generous, creative, occasionally snarky, and feisty to the end with no patience for foolishness, she lived a full, rich life.

Caroline's spirit will continue to live on in the hearts and minds of her daughter Rachel Gakenheimer, her daughter Katherine Gakenheimer and son-in-law Joshua Begin, her grandchildren Jesse and Vienne Begin, her brother Abe Baggins and his wife Selkie O'Mira, as well as an extended family and loving friends.

A private burial will be held on August 29th.
