Carol Jean Greenough, age 84, of Harvard, passed away at Care Dimensions Hospice House in Lincoln on May 4, 2022.
Carol was born in Medford on December 14, 1937, the only child of the late Russell and Helen (Hoole) Greenough. She was the valedictorian of her class at Somerville High School in 1955.
A woman ahead of her time, Carol was one of only a few women admitted to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She left off formal studies to work for the Institute as a software system programmer, an unusual field for a woman. Even more unusual, she taught herself the skills she needed for her work in software. Carol's career included programming and systems analyst positions for several companies before settling at Weyerhaeuser as a software programmer from 1981 to 2006.
While working at Weyerhaeuser and living in Tacoma, Washington, Carol met her "soul mate" Robert Main, who was her partner until his death in 1990. After his death, Carol moved back to Arlington to care for her Mother. In 2010, Carol built her dream house in Harvard, Massachusetts. Living in Harvard was ideal for Carol, as her home was situated among the trees she so loved.
Carol found joy in the outdoors, the ocean, art, music, dogs, good food and especially, great chocolate. She loved to travel and enjoyed several trips with Robert's son, Roy Main. She was a devoted patron of the Harvard Public Library.
Carol will be laid to rest beside her parents at Westlawn Cemetery, 215 Boston Road, Lowell, during a graveside service on Saturday, June 25th at 10 am. For information about the burial services please contact Margaret Hoag at 978-266-0101 ext. 106 or mhoag@eckel-law.com.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the charity of one's choice.
Arrangements are under the care of Dee Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Concord.
