Calvin W. Cumings, 93, of Bedford, MA, formerly of Acton, MA, and Troy, NH, died Wednesday, April 13, 2016, at Carleton-Willard Village in Bedford, MA. He was the husband of Patricia (Brown) Cumings.
Born in Troy, NH, on April 17, 1922, he was the son of the late Fred T. and Margaret (Woodward) Cumings. He attended Troy public schools and graduated from Vermont Academy in Saxtons River, VT in 1940. He briefly attended the University of New Hampshire.
During World War II, he joined the US Army Air Force in 1942 and was a staff sergeant when he was honorably discharged in 1946.
Following his military service, Mr. Cumings worked as treasurer for his family's lumber business, F. T. Cumings, Inc. He was employed for a few years at Sealol Corporation in Keene, NH, which made specialized precision seals for NASA, and then began employment as a sales engineer in specialized printing for Markem Corporation in Keene, NH. While working for Markem, he was assigned work in the Caribbean, Georgia and Alabama.
A resident of Acton from 1983 to 2008, he was a life member of the American Legion Post. He was also a longtime member of the Altamont Masonic Lodge in Peterborough, NH and during the 1950's he served as Master for two years for the Monadnock Masonic Lodge #80 in Troy, NH. While a resident of Troy, New Hampshire he was quite active in the town and was a former selectman.
In addition to his wife, Patricia, he is survived by three daughters and their husbands, Deborah Fleming and her husband, David; Louise Carter and her husband, Hugh, all of Daytona Beach, FL; and Martha Hongisto and her husband, Brad, of Keene, NH; 7 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, a brother, Allen H. Cumings, Sr., of Jaffrey, NH, and many nieces and nephews. His two brothers F. T. Cumings, Jr. and William F. Cumings and great-granddaughter, Anna Okarski, all died earlier.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, May 4th at 2 PM at Carleton-Willard Village, 100 Old Billerica Road, Bedford.
Burial will be in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, Concord, MA, where officers of the U. S. Air Force will present military honors.
