Obituary

Betty Jean (Zumwalt) Horne, 85, died Wednesday, August 5, 2015 at her Concord home. She was the beloved wife of the late Edward C. Horne. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on December 7, 1929, she was the daughter of the late John B. Zumwalt, Sr. and Nina (Clement) Zumwalt. She came to Concord in 1938, graduated from Concord High school in 1947 and graduated in 1949 from the two-year college course at Katherine Gibbs in Boston. In 1951 she married the love of her life, Edward Horne, they raised their children in the home Ed built on Nashoba Road in Concord. Betty worked in the accounting office at the Peter Bulkely School in 1965. In 1971 she went to the Sanborn Building at the Middle School working for the guidance department. She became an administrative secretary at Peabody Concord Middle School in 1978 until her retirement in 1994. During retirement, Mrs. Horne volunteered at the Council on Aging and served on The Friends committee for seven years. However, she said her best job was raising their four children and being involved in the every day lives of her ten grandchildren. Survivors include her four children, John N. Horne and his wife, Susan (Myette) of Lancaster, Nancy J. Prunier and her husband Francis of Shirley, Sandra E. Hennessy and her husband Robert of Westford and Laurie E. Iacino and her husband Joseph of San Diego, CA. She was Nana and so special to her adored ten grandchildren, Christopher John Horne and his wife Elizabeth Nichols, Nicholas Horne and Alexander Horne, Francis Prunier and his wife Chantelle LaChance, Justin Prunier and Victoria Prunier, Robert Hennessy, Brendan Hennessy, Mark Hennessy and Megan Hennessy and her husband Michael McPherson and two great grand daughters, Tucker Grace Horne and Skylar Mae Prunier. She was the sister of Alice Finan and her husband Richard of St. Petersburg, FL, Nina Clark and her husband Kendall of Wareham and Mary Ann King of Orlando, FL. She was also the sister of the late John B. Zumwalt, Jr., William J. Zumwalt and Robert L. Zumwalt. Visiting hours at the Dee Funeral Home, 27 Bedford Street, Concord Center will be held on Saturday, August 8th from 2 to 6 pm. At her request, funeral services are private. Contributions in her memory may be made to Minuteman ARC, 1269 Main Street, Concord, MA 01742 or to Concord Council on Aging, 1276 Main Street, Concord, MA 01742. Arrangements are under the care of the Dee Funeral Home of Concord.
