Obituary

Bernard A. Smith, 92, a longtime resident of West Concord, MA, died peacefully on June 7, 2022. The seventh of ten children, Bernie was born in Somerville MA on September 27, 1929 to Edith Marie (Glenn) and John A. Smith. Bernie spent his entire career in the heating oil industry, retiring as CEO of the New England Fuel Institute. In retirement, he formed Concord Energy Options and consulted to the industry as an expert witness. He graduated Malden Catholic High School in 1947 and served in the Army Signal Corps during the Korean War. He married his wife Patricia Joan (Kelly) in 1958 and graduated from Merrimack College in 1961. He was an active member of Our Lady Help of Christians Church and Holy Family Parish in Concord and served as lay reader and Eucharistic minister. He was a member of the Concord Council #287 Knights of Columbus. For many years, he headed the line crew for New England Patriots home games, and he also enjoyed golf in his spare time. Bernie is predeceased by his parents, his wife and his siblings Irene Kelley, John Smith, Dorothy McMakin, Edith Feltrup, Barbara Beale, Teresa Caserta and Marie McAllister. He is survived by his brothers, Edwin Smith and George Smith; his children, Kathleen (John) Jaworski, Brian (Judith) Smith, and Alison (Christopher) Koehnke; six grandchildren, Kevin Bryan, Mary Alivia Tolsma, Robert, Carolyn, Kathleen and William Koehnke; and two great-grandchildren, Jan and Eero Tolsma. Family and friends will gather for visiting hours at Dee Funeral Home, 27 Bedford Street, Concord Center, on Monday, June 20th from 5 to 7 pm. His funeral will take place on Tuesday, June 21st at 9:30 am from the Dee Funeral Home, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:30 am in Holy Family Parish, Monument Square, Concord Center. Please click here to view the church livestream of the Mass . Burial will follow at St. Bernard's Cemetery in Concord, where Officers of the United States Army will present military honors. Concord's Town Flag will fly at half-staff on Tuesday, June 21st in honor of Bernie's faithful military service to our country. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the charity of one's choice. Arrangements are under the care of Dee Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Concord.
