Obituary

Beatrice Shneider died on Sunday, June 30th, 2019 at age 94, surrounded by loving family and friends at her home in Carlisle, Massachusetts. She was known as "Bea" to friends, "Mom" to her children and "Boby" to her grandchildren. Her parents, Norma and Maurice Schaffer, were Jewish Eastern European immigrants who settled in Cleveland, Ohio where she was born on November 8th, 1924. She was the second of four children. She studied journalism at Ohio State University and lived briefly in San Diego, where she met and married her husband Harold (Hal) Shneider in 1946, after a whirlwind romance. He had just finished his tour of duty in the Navy in the South Pacific. The couple raised their children in Stamford, Connecticut, and Weston, Massachusetts, and later lived briefly in Oklahoma City, where she completed her college degree at Central State University. They moved to Carlisle in 1975, becoming active and giving members of the community. She was a longtime proofreader for the local newspaper, the Carlisle Mosquito. She volunteered at the Carlisle Library and Schools. A renaissance woman known for her quick wit and intelligence, she loved cultivating friendships. Lifelong learning was her passion. Some of her activities included folk, line, and belly dancing classes, martial arts, book groups, and tutoring until her early 90s. An accomplished musician, she sang in the Handel and Haydn Society Chorus, the Madrigals, and the Carlisle Intergenerational Chorus, among others. She had an extensive knowledge of 20th century American as well as International music and was known to break into song mid-sentence. She gave generously of herself to her family and grandchildren. Bea is survived by her brother Daniel Schaffer, children Claire Asarnow (Elliot Asarnow), Deborah Shneider Smith (Stephen Smith), Celia Shneider (Mark Fairweather) and Joshua Shneider (Rosemary Moore), and grandchildren Rachel, Zachary, Jenny, Jesse, Faye, Violet and Nicholas. She is preceded in death by her sister Chaya Goldie, brother Ezra, and husband Harold. Her personable energetic presence will be missed by all who knew her. Family and friends are invited to gather for her funeral service on Wednesday, July 3rd at 2 pm in the Farrar Chapel of the Dee Funeral Home, 27 Bedford Street, Concord Center. Private burial for the family will follow at Green Cemetery in Carlisle. Arrangements are under the care of Dee Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Concord.
