Barberie (Harmer) Van Valey, 95, formerly of Carlisle and Sudbury, died on December 30, 2020 at Lowell General Hospital after a short illness. She was the wife of the late George H.R McQueen of Sudbury and the late Edwin C. VanValey of New York.
She was born in Boston on October 13, 1925 to Dr. Torr W. and T. Barberie (Hallett) Harmer. She spent her childhood in Winchester, MA and was known to all as Bunny, the nickname given to her by her father. Bunny attended Wheaton College in Norton, MA and finished her college career at the University of Pennsylvania where her new husband was attending dental school. Upon their graduation, the VanValeys started their family in Dr. VanValey's hometown of Briarcliff Manor, NY.
In 1960, she returned to Winchester with her 2 children and lived there for the duration of their primary education. In 1971, she moved to her remote "heaven" in Warner, NH, an 80 acre farm which she named Mink Hill Farm. In New Hampshire, she turned her lifelong love of gardening into a vocation designing gardens for churches, private residences and working on the gardens at the John Hay Estate at The Fells on Lake Sunapee. Most happy with a garden spade in hand, she was very proud to be known as the little white haired lady who could wrestle a boulder or large piece of granite into position in the garden.
In 1999, at her granddaughter's fifth birthday party in Sudbury, she reconnected with George McQueen, of Sudbury, an old flame from her school days in Winchester who she said was "the boy who taught me how to drive." The couple remained inseparable and married several years later and would spend time between his home in Sudbury, and from May through October, on his beloved sailboat in Camden, ME.
After George's passing in 2009, Bunny remained in Sudbury until 2016, when she came to live in Carlisle to be near her son and his wife. Bunny was always active in church affairs, most recently, The First Parish of Sudbury.
She leaves behind her daughter, Barberie VanValey of Concord, NH, her son, Ted VanValey and his wife Shelley Dweck of Carlisle, MA, and one granddaughter, Grace VanValey of Sudbury. Her only sibling, Lt Col. Torr W. Harmer Jr., predeceased her.
Bunny will be laid to rest during a private burial service at Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to The John Hay Estate, PO Box 276, Newbury, NH 03255 (www.thefells.org).
Arrangements are under the care of Dee Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Concord.
