Barbara (Bobbie) Standish Payne Atchley, died March 4th at the Lifecare Center of Nashoba Valley in Littleton, MA, where she had lived for the past six years. she was 88 and had been a resident of Lincoln, MA since 1956 and a summer resident of Edgartown, MA since 1967.
Barbara Standish was borin in Wilkes-Barre, PA on December 16, 1921, the second of three daughters to Bruce Bullard Payne and Marion Woodward Payne. She grew up in Wilkes-Barre and graduated from the Wyoming Seminary School in 1939. She attended Wheaton College in Norton, MA , but left because she felt she was not contributing to the war effort. She later attended the Katherine Gibbs School in Boston, MA, where she received her certification in 1943, and went to work as a medical secretary in the pathology lab at hospitals in Boston and New York City. In the summer of 1953 she met Dana Winslow Atchley, Jr. and they married on May 1, 1954. Together they had four daughters; Marion (Quita), Abigail, Cornelia and Katherine.
An excellent athlete, avid tennis player, sailor and horsewoman, bobbie loved to rider her horse, Joplin, cruise the New England coast on Appledore with her husband and sail her Herreshoff, Jumpstart. She was mother and friend to all - her expansive family included her children, stepchildren, grandchildren, step grandchildren, step great grandchildren and all of their friends. During winters in Lincoln and summers in Edgartown her house was always filled with young people and she unfailingly took a keen interest in what they were doing with their lives. Her daughter, Abbie, died in 1977 at the age of 21, and the loss profoundly affected Bobbie for the remainder of her life. Following Abbie's death, the Atchley's founded the Anorexia Bulimia Care Organization, known as ABC, where Bobbie devoted countless hours in an effort to bring awareness, knowledge and comfort to other suffering families. Her husband, Dana Atchley, Jr. died April 22, 1995.
She was a member of the Edgartown Yacht Club and the Chappaquiddick Beach Club.
She is survived by her three daughters, Marion Quita Woodward Atchley Schillhammer of Acton, MA Cornelia Phister Atchley of Alexandria, VA, and Katherine (Katie) Saltonstall Atchley of Charlestown, MA; her two sisters Marion P. Tubbs of Haverford, PA, and Elizabeth P. Shannon of Englewood, CO; two grandchildren, Marion (Molly) Woodward Merrick of Chestnut Hill, MA and Dana Atchley Merrick of Acton, MA; three stepdaughters, Mary A. (Polly) Allen of Lebanon, NH, Elizabeth A. (Betsy) Rowland of Edmond, OK, and Sarah Atchley of Dalton, MA; six step-grandchildren and four step great grandchildren. In addition to her husband and her daughter Abigail Adams Atchley, she was predeceased by her stepson, Dana Winslow Atchley III in December 2000.
A memorial service will be held at the First Parish, 14 Bedford Road,in Lincoln, MA,on September 7th at3 p.m.A reception will follow at the Pierce House, 17 Weston Road, Lincoln, MA.
