Obituary

Barbara A. Newkirk, 67, of Concord, died Saturday, December 6, 2014 at Miriam Boyd Parlin Hospice Center in Wayland. She was the beloved wife for 46 years of James L. Newkirk. Born in Jackson Heights, New York on June 1, 1947 she was the daughter of the late Frederick G. Schuler and Martha (Salchli) Schuler. She attended Suffolk County public schools and graduated from Port Jefferson High School in 1965. In 1969, she received a Bachelor in Education from American University in Washington, DC and a Master's in Special Education in 1992 from Fitchburg State College. For many years, Mrs. Newkirk was a teacher at Lexington High School after teaching for several years at the Concord-Carlisle High School. Previously she taught in the private and public schools in Chevy Chase, Bethesda, Potomac and Baltimore County, Maryland schools. Most recently she was a substitute teacher at the Concord-Carlisle High School and Lexington High School. An award winning special education teacher, she was the recipient of the 2007 -2008 Asberger/Autism Award for Excellence. A 34 year resident of Concord, she was an avid gardener and enjoyed crafts and knitting. Previously she lived in Bethesda, Maryland. In addition to her husband, James, she is survived by her son, Brian Newkirk and his wife Alissa of Somerville, her daughter, Katie Newkirk and her husband Tejas of Windsor, Connecticut, her grandson, Oliver Newkirk of Somerville, her brother, Michael Schuler of North Carolina and her sister, Lisa Jennings of Florida. A Memorial service in Trinity Episcopal Church, 81 Elm Street, Concord will be held on Saturday, January 10th at 2 PM. Private family burial was held in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, Concord.
