Obituary

Barbara M. (Damour) McTighe, 87, formerly of Cambridge, died Saturday, June 21, 2014 at Rivercrest Nursing Home in Concord. She was the beloved wife of the late Mel McTighe who died in 1979. Born in Boston, she grew up in Cambridge where she lived most of her life. She was the daughter of the late Louis P. and Elizabeth M. (Kelleher) Damour. During her career she attended many cooking classes, including one in Paris, France. During the 1960's, she was employed at the Cambridge Coffee, Tea and Spice House. For thirty years, prior to her retirement in the 1990's, Mrs. McTighe was the manager and trainer of The Kitchen in Harvard Square, Cambridge. Mrs. McTighe was well known and respected for her expertise in culinary and gourmet kitchen equipment and was often interviewed by the Boston Globe on articles about this subject. Julia Child and many other notables frequented the store. A longtime resident of Cambridge, Mrs. McTighe was a Communicant of St. Peter's Church in Cambridge. A gracious hostess, her home in Cambridge was known as a place where people with artistic backgrounds were welcomed. An avid appreciator of the arts she enjoyed visiting art museums, drawing in charcoal and painting watercolors. She perfected the art of conversation and had a gracious heart. Survivors include her three children, Kathy Garon and her husband Ron of Westford, Bill McTighe and his wife Susan of Arlington and Beth Hedger and her husband Bryce of Georgetown, TX; her sister, Elaine Damour of Encinitas, CA; her brother, Bill Damour and his wife Margie of Burlington; her brother-in-law, Bob Brackbill of Dallas Texas; her sister-in-law Nancy Bassett of Plaistow, NH; her grandchildren, Matt Garon and his wife Jenn, Jon Garon, Ryan and Sara McTighe and Katie Hedger, her great grandson Tommy Garon; and many nieces and nephews. She was also the sister of the late Cay Brackbill. A funeral Mass will be held on Friday, June 27th at 10 am in St. Eulalia Parish, 50 Ridge Street, Winchester. Burial will be in the family burial plot in Cambridge Cemetery. Contributions in her memory may be made to The Salvation Army, P. O. Box 390647, Cambridge, MA 02139.
