IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Barbara George
Lewis
February 18, 1956 – September 1, 2022
Barbara George Lewis, 66, of Carlisle, passed away peacefully at home on September 1, 2022.
She was born in Poughkeepsie, NY to Glenn and Ruth (Eister) George. She attended Ketcham High School in Wappingers Falls, NY and earned her degree in Atmospheric Sciences at Cornell University. After graduation, she worked as a meteorologist in New Orleans, forecasting for the offshore oil rigs. She returned north to work as a private meteorologist for the NationalWeather Company at Westchester County Airport where she provided both weather and flight routing services to the corporations that maintained flight operations there. While working in White Plains, she met and married Dr. Alan L. Lewis who lived aboard a sailboat in Rowayton, CT; she moved aboard after the wedding, spending both summers and winters aboard. Although she didn't consider herself adventurous, she often was the leader of initiatives that others eschewed.
After moving to a 120-acre farm in Big Rapids, Michigan in 1991, she lived with her two young boys and husband in a small converted pole barn while they built a new home and barn on a lake on the property. She was particularly active in promoting gifted educational opportunities in the school system, including volunteering her own time.
The family moved to Carlisle in 2000 when her husband was appointed as president of the New England College of Optometry in Boston. Very active in a number of civic organizations in Carlisle and Concord, including the League of Women Voters and the Garden Club, she was a passionate supporter of environmental, election reform, and women's causes. She helped organize the Carlisle Town Election Forum for many years. She was a founder and president of the Carlisle Artisans, a local non-profit gallery that promotes local artists and craftsmen and which donates a portion of revenues to other local non-profits.
She is survived by Alan, her husband of 39 years, sons Evan of Melrose, MA and Keith, his wife Sinclair and daughter Lyra of Durham, NC. She also leaves two sisters, Cindy Barbieri of New Berlin, WI and Robin Scappaticci of Colorado Springs, CO as well as several nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to a celebration of Barbara's life on Monday, October 3rd at 3 pm in the Farrar Chapel of Dee Funeral Home, 27 Bedford Street, Concord Center. Private burial will be held at Green Cemetery in Carlisle.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the League of Women Voters of Concord-Carlisle, P.O. Box 34, Concord, MA 01742 or the charity of your choice.
Arrangements are under the care of Dee Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Concord.
