Obituary

Barbara A. Lenk, Associate Justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court (ret), peacefully passed away on May 19, 2026, surrounded by her loving family. She was 75 years old.

Born on December 2, 1950, and raised in Queens, New York, Barbara was the daughter of John Lenk, a bookbinder, and Pauline Lenk, a housekeeper. She often spoke proudly of her working-class upbringing and of the values her parents instilled in her: the importance of family, the dignity of work, and the power of education. Barbara strongly believed that every person, no matter how they dressed or what they did for a living, was to be treated with courtesy, dignity and respect.

Barbara had a lifelong love of learning and justice. She graduated magna cum laude from Fordham University in 1972 with a degree in philosophy. Barbara was awarded a Ph.D. in political philosophy from Yale University in 1978 and received her J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1979, completing her dissertation and defending her thesis while attending law school.

Barbara began her legal career at Brown Rudnick Freed & Gesmer (now Brown Rudnick LLP), where she specialized in civil litigation and First Amendment law, eventually becoming a partner and serving on the firm’s management team.

In 1993, Governor William Weld appointed Barbara to the Massachusetts Superior Court; two years later, he appointed her to the Massachusetts Appeals Court. In 2011, Governor Deval Patrick appointed her to the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court (SJC). As Barbara noted at her swearing in, she was the first openly Polish-American to serve on the SJC.

Over nearly three decades on the bench — including more than nine years on the Supreme Judicial Court, sixteen years on the Appeals Court, and two years on the Superior Court — Barbara was widely respected for her intellect, fairness, precision, and commitment to justice. Upon her retirement, Associate Justice Frank Gaziano, speaking for the SJC commented, Justice Lenk “taught us never to settle for easy answers, and that the solution to complex problems is to roll up your sleeves and dig even deeper…. [a]nd … to strive for excellence.” Barbara authored hundreds of opinions and was known not only for her insightful legal scholarship, but also for opinions rich with thoughtful references to Greek mythology, music, and popular culture.

Throughout her judicial career, Barbara carried a handwritten reminder of the principles that guided her service: “Hear courteously; answer wisely; consider soberly; decide impartially.” Barbara believed deeply that the law was not just an abstract exercise. Barbara never lost sight of the real people behind each case and remained steadfast in her belief that the law belongs to everyone. As she once said, “Each case that comes before me is my most important case.”

Barbara treasured mentoring young associates and law clerks, many of whom remained close to her throughout her life. She believed deeply in making a difference and in fostering service in others.

Barbara enjoyed spending time outside with her dogs. She loved nothing more than a long walk with the dogs at the Carlisle Cranberry Bog or through the Estabrook Woods - often followed by an ice cream treat (for both her and the dogs) at Kimball Farm. She also enjoyed travel, particularly annual family trips to Acadia National Park.

Above all else, Barbara loved her family deeply. She is survived by her spouse, Debra; her daughters, Katie and Julia; her son-in-law, Jake; and her cherished grandchildren, Haleigh, Paxton, and Benson, whose love and energy always brought a smile to her face. She also leaves behind an extended family of friends, former clerks, colleagues, and loved ones whose lives were profoundly enriched by her wisdom, generosity, humor, and love.

Services and burial are private.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks any who wish to make a donation in Barbara’s honor to consider one of the following worthy charities: Care Dimensions, Feeding America, and Pine Street Inn.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Dee Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Concord.
