Obituary

Arvin Herley Smith passed away peacefully Sunday morning, February 13, 2022 in Concord, MA at the age of 92. He was born to Riley Fred and Effie Mae Jones Smith in Donley County, Texas on May 16, 1929. He was raised on a cotton farm in McLean, Texas and was the oldest of nine children. Arvin met the love of his life, Wynona in McLean and was married in Fort Worth, Texas in 1954. They celebrated 67 years of marriage this past summer. From a young age Arvin was hardworking, intelligent and driven. He graduated from McLean High School in 1948 and attended New Mexico A&M, at the time, on a football scholarship. However, in 1950 after being sidelined with an injury, he joined the Navy. He served during the Korean War and reached the rank of Gun Fire Control Technician while aboard the USS Oberon. After his service in the Navy, Arvin married Wynona, and then returned to school while working full time to support his growing family. In 1959, he graduated from Texas Christian University with degrees in physics and mathematics. Arvin and Wynona lived in many different parts of the country during their lives together. Their two favorite homes were in Concord, MA and Colleyville, TX. Arvin never stopped talking about his desire to move back to Texas. He was a physicist, a researcher, and a businessman. Arvin was employed at JPL as a physicist and later worked at NASA where he headed a division in the Office of Advanced Research and Technology. In 1970, he took a job at Thermo Electron Corp. where he would become Executive Vice President. After retiring from Thermo in 2000, Arvin remained active in the business world well into his eighties as President and CEO of GlenRose Instruments. While Arvin was passionate about his career there was nothing he loved more than his family. He enjoyed traveling both internationally and across the country, taking road trips to visit with his siblings, daughters and grandchildren. No matter where life took him, there was nothing Arvin enjoyed more than spending time with his beloved wife. Arvin was preceded in death by his cherished wife, Wynona L. Smith. The loving brother to Fred, Warren, Sadie, Casper, Larry, Herschel, Helen and James. Devoted father of Debra Turner and her late husband David Turner of Bradford, NH; Donna Murphy and her late husband Philip Murphy of Boxborough, MA; and Diane Donahue of Millis, MA. Caring Uncle to numerous nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews. Loving Grandad to his grandchildren Laura, Robyn, Greg, Will, Brian, Destinee and Robert; and his great grandchildren Ethan, Rena, Aiden, and John. Family members will gather privately for his funeral service in the Farrar Chapel of the Dee Funeral Home in Concord Center, followed by burial with U.S. Navy military honors at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the American Heart Association, PO Box 840692, Dallas, TX 75284-0692 or Texas Christian University, Office of University Advancement, TCU Box 297044, Fort Worth, TX 76129.
